Johnson Controls is seeking an experienced Area Manager, HVAC Controls Systems Installation to lead project execution across a designated geographic area, strengthen local capability, and support the deployment of Metasys®, OpenBlue®, and integrated building automation solutions.
Role Overview
This is a field leadership role that serves as the Area subject matter expert for Building Automation Systems (BAS), HVAC Controls, and smart building installations. You will partner closely with Market General Managers, Installation Managers, Project Managers, Operations Leaders, and field teams to help projects deliver safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead HVAC Controls installation execution across the Area, including backlog delivery, project health, on-time completion, and financial performance.
- Provide technical leadership on BAS projects, including control systems, graphics, integrations, commissioning activities, and project turnover.
- Partner with local operations teams to identify project risks early and implement mitigation plans that protect customer outcomes and margin.
- Support growth initiatives by strengthening HVAC Controls execution capability in developing and underperforming markets.
- Review project portfolios and forecast delivery performance, resource requirements, and backlog conversion strategies.
- Drive adoption of Johnson Controls Systems Enablement standards, installation best practices, and consistent delivery processes.
- Conduct execution reviews and root cause analysis to identify opportunities to improve productivity, quality, and customer satisfaction.
- Engage directly with customers on large or complex Building Automation and HVAC Controls projects to support requirements, turnover, commissioning, and acceptance.
- Coach Installation Managers, Project Managers, Systems Specialists, and HVAC Controls technicians to build stronger technical and operational capability.
- Maintain strong operating rhythms with local leadership teams and monitor key project and business metrics to drive accountability.
- Partner with Environmental Health & Safety teams to reinforce safe work practices and support a zero harm culture.
- Support workforce planning, talent development, succession planning, and onboarding efforts across the Area.
How You Will Do It
- Own outcomes with accountability, safety, and integrity by tracking execution performance closely, addressing issues early, and keeping commitments visible to local teams and customers.
- Stay close to the work and remove obstacles for customers through regular field visits, project reviews, and direct engagement on complex BAS and HVAC Controls installations.
- Improve every day through continuous improvement, candor, and structured problem-solving by reviewing root causes, standardizing lessons learned, and closing actions that strengthen future execution.
- Win as one team by aligning market leadership, project teams, and field resources around shared priorities, clear handoffs, and practical support.
- Use operating reviews, forecast cadences, and project health checks to keep backlog, resource planning, schedule performance, and margin on track.
- Apply Johnson Controls technical standards and platform knowledge to guide quality execution on Metasys®, OpenBlue®, and integrated building automation work.
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, HVAC, Building Automation, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
- 7+ years of experience in Building Automation Systems (BAS), HVAC Controls, Systems Installation, Construction Operations, or related technical leadership roles.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex controls installation projects and operational performance across multiple locations.
- Strong knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS), HVAC Controls, Direct Digital Controls (DDC), mechanical systems integration, commissioning processes, and networked building technologies.
- Experience leading project delivery teams in a matrixed organization.
- Strong financial acumen, forecasting, and backlog management experience.
- Excellent communication, coaching, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to travel throughout the assigned Area.
Preferred
- Experience with Johnson Controls Metasys®, OpenBlue®, Facility Explorer®, or similar Building Automation platforms.
- Advanced knowledge of HVAC systems, mechanical equipment, control strategies, and energy optimization.
- Experience managing large-scale healthcare, data center, pharmaceutical, higher education, industrial, or commercial controls projects.
- Lean, Kaizen, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement experience.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent project management training.
- NICET, HVAC, Controls, or industry certifications.
HIRING SALARY RANGE: $121-165k(Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
