Ambri, an energy company commercializing innovative battery technology developed at MIT, is looking for an experienced scientist or engineer to take on open-ended R&D projects, with the goal of improving battery cell performance and lifetime.
Working in the Cell Technology team, the ideal candidate is detail-oriented and a confident communicator comfortable sharing results and technical feedback effectively. With a curiosity for continuous learning, the individual hired into the role will be able to apply their previous chemistry experience and adapt to Ambri’s unique chemistry and challenges in a collaborative team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, prototype, and evaluate next-gen battery cell components and cell chemistry improvements at R&D scale using both full cell and ex situ tests
  • Assess the impact of changes to component designs on the battery cell performance by qualitative and quantitative data analysis
  • Design and execute studies to improve fundamental understanding of operating mechanisms in Ambri battery cells
  • Actively participate in engineering and design team meetings, including summarizing and presenting results
  • Advance promising ideas to proof-of-concept testing in commercial-scale cells
  • Work collaboratively with R&D cell operations team, including providing engineering, logistical, and hands-on support as operational needs dictate
  • Actively participate in the lab safety and improvement program

Requirements

  • Minimum BS degree in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or similar
  • 3+ years’ experience working in laboratory or other research-focused environments
  • Demonstrated knowledge of chemistry, materials science, and relevant materials characterization techniques, especially as applied to electrochemical systems
  • Previous experience with or interest and aptitude to learn about the following: inert-atmosphere gloveboxes; metal fabrication and joining processes (such as light machining, power tool operation, TIG welding); high-temperature furnaces, controllers and materials handling; data analysis tools/techniques, and mechanical design (SolidWorks)
  • Proven ability to work well as part of a team, as well as independently
  • Solid written, verbal, and listening skills
  • Confidently able to communicate results and share technical feedback
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and documentation
  • Knowledge of basic chemistry and chemical handling
  • Adherence to safety protocols
  • Competence with computers including MS office
