Principal Thermal Engineer
Amogy
Houston, TX, USA
Posted on May 22, 2025
Brief Description
Amogy is an innovative cleantech startup on a mission to unlock ammonia's potential as a clean energy source. Driven by a vision of a more sustainable future, we've developed carbon-free energy solutions that leverage ammonia as an alternative fuel to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors, including maritime shipping and stationary power generation. Join our dynamic team as we accelerate the commercialization of our technology and revolutionize the future of energy.
We’re seeking a Principal Thermal Engineer to provide technical leadership across the full product-development life-cycle for high-temperature chemical reactors and combustion-based energy systems. The role spans advanced modeling (CFD / FEA) and hands-on experimental validation, ensuring that designs meet performance, safety, and reliability targets from concept through commercialization.

What We Offer:
Amogy is an equal opportunity employer and participates in E-Verify. If you receive an offer of employment from Amogy, you will need to go through the E-Verify process of digital verification of your employment authorization documents as provided on the Form I-9. Participation in E-Verify does not limit your right to work and verification will only be completed after you become an employee with Amogy.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Thermal & Reaction System Design
- Own thermal architecture for catalytic reactors, reformers, burners, and heat-exchanger networks.
- Couple heat-/mass-transfer analyses with reaction-kinetics models to optimize efficiency, emissions, and hardware durability.
- Computational Engineering
- Develop and validate CFD/FEA models (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM+, COMSOL) for conjugate heat transfer, multiphase flow, and reacting gases.
- Drive mesh/solver best practices, sensitivity analyses, scale-up correlations
- Experimental Programs
- Design high-temperature test rigs, select reliable instrumentation, and oversee data-acquisition campaigns.
- Translate test insights into model calibration, design updates, and specification sheets.
- Cross-Functional Leadership
- Partner with cross function team of mechanical, electrical, controls, and materials engineers on system integration and thermal-management strategies.
- Provide technical mentorship; review design packages, HAZOPs, and safety cases.
- Product & Program Support
- Generate thermal requirements, DFMEA inputs, and validation plans.
- Support supplier selection, factory acceptance tests, and field-commissioning troubleshooting.
The minimum requirements we seek:
- Education – B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Mechanical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering (or related), with focus in heat & mass transfer or combustion.
- Experience – 10 + years in designing and analyzing high-temperature or chemically reacting systems
- Expertise in conduction, convection, radiation, phase change, diffusion, and fluid dynamics.
- Proven track record coupling reaction kinetics with transport phenomena in catalytic or combustion devices.
- Advanced proficiency in commercial CFD/FEA suites and scripting/post-processing.
- Hands-on lab skills: burner or reactor setup, flow/pressure metrology, DAQ, instrumentations, & uncertainty analysis.
- Leadership & Communication – Demonstrated ability to set technical direction, influence cross-functional teams, and present complex findings.
- Regulatory & Safety – Working knowledge of relevant codes/standards and process safety methodologies (LOPA, HAZOP).
- Design of reforming, hydrogen, syngas systems with combustion technologies.
- Experience scaling prototypes to pilot- or commercial-scale manufacturing.
- Familiarity with controls integration.
What We Offer:
- Competitive Medical, Dental & Vision Care
- FSA and HSA
- 401(k) with 5% company match
- Life insurance
- Flexible (PTO)
- Ancillary Benefits
- Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
- Open, supportive culture of drive and execution
