Ampaire is seeking a Staff Engineer for Hybrid Electric Powertrains. This role will own the continued development and commercialization of the hybrid powertrain unit integrating our reciprocating engine, electric motor/generator, and associated auxiliary equipment. The position focuses on managing integration and testing of the unit, plus continued maturation of the firewall forward fluid, thermal, and structural auxiliary equipment. Key qualifications include experience with aviation reciprocating engine integration and testing. The role reports to the Powertrain Lead and involves occasional travel for remote flight campaigns. A more senior position will be considered based on experience.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the integration and testing of hybrid electric powertrains for commercial-intent aircraft
    • Build hybrid electric powertrain test fixtures; standalone and on-wing
    • Integrate instrumentation
    • Develop test stand GUIs
    • Operate development and certification powertrain tests
    • Analyze collected data and generate reports
  • Participate in commercial certification project reviews and trade studies
  • Support the development of required certification documentation
  • Support the development of qualified validation and verification processes
  • Reports to the Powertrain Lead

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant engineering discipline
  • 5+ years of increasing responsibilities in powertrain integration and test projects
  • Expert knowledge of reciprocating engine operation
  • Expert knowledge of relevant instrumentation
  • Proficient with dynamometer testing
  • Proficient with thermal management test systems for powertrains
  • Familiarity with operating high voltage (800V+) and high power (50 kW+) systems and safety practices

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in relevant engineering discipline
  • 10+ years of increasing responsibilities in powertrain integration and test projects
  • Proficient with vibration data systems testing
  • Proficient with electric, reciprocating, and/or gas turbine powertrain engineering
  • Experience with powertrain aviation certification-intent projects
  • Hands-on experience with operating high voltage (800V+) and high power (50 kW+) systems and safety practices

Salary

$125,000 - $230,000 per year
