The Position
Description
Uplight is creating a new category of energy. We make software that manages energy resources in homes and businesses—including things like smart thermostats, electric vehicles, solar panels, storage batteries, heat pumps, and even people’s behavior—to generate, shift, or save energy to balance the grid, making it more efficient and reliable. This creates clean energy capacity that can be used by the power grid instead of burning more fossil fuels. Our solutions accelerate the transition to clean energy and save money for energy customers.
We are seeking a Director, Product Management – Data Platform to join our team and help us achieve our ambitious goals for our business and the planet.
In this role, you will define and drive the vision, strategy, and execution for Uplight’s Data Platform—the backbone of our applications and machine learning efforts. This platform ingests and makes available high-value data from utilities, OEM devices, and other providers, ensures governance, lineage, and quality, and empowers internal and external teams with trusted, real-time insights. It also empowers accelerated model development through its Machine Learning Operations (ML Ops) tooling
Beyond being an internal foundation, the Data Platform is also a customer-facing value engine. It enables business intelligence for utilities and partners, provides a Developer Platform to accelerate innovation, and serves as the launching pad for future data-driven products and services. Your mission is to ensure this platform not only scales with technical excellence but also maximizes customer value from data in every form.
What you will contribute:
- Deep Technical Expertise. You understand modern data architectures including Lakehouses, ingestion pipelines, real-time observability, governance, ML Ops, and developer platforms. You leverage this to partner with teammates to make data easy to use and power our products.
- Data Business Orientation. You have experience turning data platforms into customer-facing value propositions, such as BI tools, APIs, and embedded analytics.
- Horizontal Leadership. You influence across technical and business stakeholders, ensuring foundational data investments directly translate into customer impact.
- Systems Thinking. You see how ingestion, governance, analytics, BI, and applications connect into a single ecosystem delivering business value.
- People Leadership. You inspire, recruit, and grow world-class product talent across global teams. You set a healthy, sustainable pace and dive deep when needed.
- Strategic Growth Mindset. You understand that platforms are not just infrastructure—they are business multipliers that create efficiency, unlock new offerings, and generate revenue.
- Strong understanding of DERs and Open Standards. Understand DERs such as thermostats, batteries, EVs, and standards such as OpenADR, IEEE 2030.5 and Message Bus.
How you will make an impact:
- Continue to develop and communicate the Data Platform strategy and roadmap, positioning it as both a core enabler of Uplight’s portfolio and a direct source of customer value.
- Drive the evolution of the platform to support best-in-class ingestion, governance, lineage, and observability, ensuring trusted data across the company.
- Deliver customer-facing capabilities such as data-centric APIs, BI and analytics offerings, enabling utilities and partners to maximize the value of their data.
- Expand the platform’s role as a Developer Platform, accelerating internal and external innovation with APIs, SDKs, and rapid development tools.
- Explore and launch new data-driven offerings, including advanced analytics, predictive insights, and ecosystem integrations.
- Partner with engineering, data science, and go-to-market teams to define investment priorities, quantify value, and drive cross-functional alignment.
- Define and monitor KPIs to measure adoption, data quality, customer impact, and business outcomes from the Data Platform.
- Manage and grow a global product team, fostering collaboration and excellence across US and India-based teams.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, clients, and the OEM Partner Ecosystem.
- Stay up-to-date on industry trends, technologies, and best practices related to IoT and Smart Home Devices.
- Represent Uplight in industry forums and technical working groups such as OpenADR Alliance, SunSpec Alliance.
What you bring to Uplight:
- 10+ years of Product Management experience, with 5+ years leading product managers (group or director-level).
- Hands-on technical background or experience in engineering/data roles; comfortable engaging deeply with data platform architectures and systems. Experience with integrations.
- Proven experience with data platforms, ingestion systems, BI/analytics/machine learning, governance, ML Ops, and developer tools. Experience with Databricks or similar technology is an extra bonus.
- Track record of launching and scaling customer-facing data products, not just infrastructure.
- Systems thinker who can simplify complexity and create clarity of vision.
- Inspiring leader with strong communication skills, able to influence across functions and at all levels.
- Experience in high-growth environments, ideally within energy, data, or SaaS technology sectors.
