Sr. Geothermal Geoscientist – Function Lead
While on a visit to Iceland in 2017, our team was introduced to the science of converting warm water into electricity. Recognizing the massive potential for geothermal applications, we founded Baseload Capital to fund geothermal projects worldwide.
In 2018 we established Baseload Power to develop and operate these projects. Today, we have power companies operating in Iceland, Japan, Taiwan and U.S, working towards our vision of a planet in balance.
Through a global partnerships and project portfolio, our mission is to scale up geothermal energy worldwide.
Our Core Values: The Foundation of Our Work
- Resilient: We adapt to ever-changing environments, take responsibility for our actions, and work hard to bring about a balanced planet.
- Impactful: We stay clear on our goals, making thoughtful decisions, and ensuring every effort drives real change. Through teamwork and strong partnerships, we hold ourselves accountable and always get things done—making a difference where it counts.
- Pioneers: We dive into new markets and income streams, never letting the risks of being first deter us from doing what we believe is right.
We're now looking for an experienced Geoscientist to take the lead in driving all subsurface work in our projects in North America, everything from green field exploration to drilling and reservoir management.
You will be an integral part of a small team with high ambitions and autonomy, and work both hands on and strategic. You will be responsible for budgeting, sourcing and leading the work of employees and external partners to ensure high-quality outcome.
Responsibilities:
- Manage, plan and conduct exploration programs, including but not limiting to field mapping, chemical sampling, geophysical exploration and well testing.
- Working collaboratively with geologists/geoscientists both within Baseload and with external consultancies or institutions, you will oversee contractor selection, service contract administration, scope of work, and the supervision and quality assurance of their work.
- Assess geothermal resource potential through geological, geophysical and geochemical data analysis together with experts from Baseload Capital, Baseload Power US and relevant contractors.
- Take full ownership of well targeting and ensure successful execution of drilling operations from a geoscience perspective.
- Demonstrate sound judgment and confidence in decision-making during drilling operations, actively seeking expert input when needed to ensure the best possible outcomes.
- Provide and develop structured technical input for company strategies, project proposal and investor communication and due diligence.
- Maintain dialogue as needed with landowners and contractors when preparing for field exploration and drilling operations, as well as in executions.
- Contribute to the development of and driving best practices regionally and across the group.
This is you, described through our core values
Resilient: You’ll show your resilience through your results-oriented approach in systematically working towards targets. With the help of your project management skills and entrepreneurial mindset, you thrive under pressure and in uncertain situations.
Impactful: Your strong communication and interpersonal skills allow you to quickly build trust with customers, partners, and suppliers—ensuring alignment and momentum. You take clear ownership of defining and communicating drilling targets, aligning technical teams and stakeholders to drive real, measurable progress in every project.
Pioneers: You are passionate about geothermal energy and deeply committed to making a meaningful impact on decarbonization in the U.S. You lead by example—taking initiative, driving results, and inspiring those around you. You empower others to reach their full potential and contribute to shared success.
Requirements:
- Advanced degree (MSc or PhD) in Geology, Geophysics, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in geothermal, from early-stage assessments to drilling and development.
- Proven ability to plan, lead and execute exploration programs, including geophysical surveys, sampling, and well testing.
- Skilled in subsurface interpretation using geological, geophysical, and geochemical data.
- Comfortable using industry-standard geoscience software (e.g., Leapfrog, ArcGIS, Petrel).
- Track record of leading multidisciplinary teams and managing external partners.
- Strong communication skills, with experience presenting technical work to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experienced in balancing strategic advisory with hands-on execution.
- Comprehensive knowledge of laws, regulations and standards related to geothermal exploitation and drilling in the US.
This is a hybrid role, with your home as your primary base. The position involves up to 50% domestic travel, especially during fieldwork or drilling operations. Occasional international travel may also be required.
We also gather one week per month at our San Francisco Bay Area office for in-person collaboration and team alignment.
As we will be reviewing applications continuously, please submit your application as soon as possible.
