In this position, you will be responsible for the design and development of ground-based equipment that supports BETA’s eVTOL aircraft, cable management solutions for charging, integration of charging solutions within heliports/vertiports, and cooling systems. In this role you will work as part of a cross-functional product development team. Part of your time will be participating in industry working groups on safety and certification requirements to gather information and represent BETA’s position.

How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:

  • Product Design and Development: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and refine product designs. Utilize knowledge of product design, materials, fabrication processes, tooling and production equipment capabilities, assembly methods, and quality control standards to develop designs which are optimized for cost, producibility, & functionality.
  • CAD Modeling and Analysis: Utilize SolidWorks to create detailed 3D mechanical components & assembly models. Utilize finite element analysis (FEA) and/or closed form analysis tools to drive design decisions.
  • Drafting and Detailing: Generate 2D drawings with detailed dimensions, tolerances, Bills Of Materials (BOMs), and specifications for manufacturing.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, software engineers, and industrial designers. Collaborate with manufacturing and production teams to address design and manufacturing constraints.
  • Training and Mentorship: Provide training and mentorship to other engineers. Foster a culture of learning and continuous improvement within the engineering team.
  • Vendor and Supplier Interaction: Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to incorporate their input into the design process.

Minimum Qualifications we are seeking:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related discipline
  • 15+ years of wide ranging experience, focused on creative mechanical part design & fabrication
  • High level understanding of design techniques & manufacturing processes for additive & subtractive machining, plastic molding, composite fabrication, welding, sheet metal, bonded assembly
  • Understanding of part inspection techniques & processes
  • Daily CAD user (preference for Solidworks) & experience with PLM software
  • Significant experience with drawing creation & interpretation, ASME Y14.5 GD&T, assigning drawing tolerances, & tolerance stack analysis
  • Experience evaluating & selecting appropriate materials and manufacturing processes
  • Experience evaluating trades during product design
  • Demonstrated ability to take a product from concept to manufacturing
  • Self-starter who shows initiative on assignments, exercises independent judgment, and professionally executes projects with little direction

Above and Beyond Qualifications that will distinguish you:

  • Advanced degree or 20+ years experience in a similar field
  • Experience designing equipment for use in outdoor or harsh environments
  • Fascination with mechanical design, inquisitive & curious person
  • Non-Conforming Material experience
  • Experience with Lean Six Sigma tools for Root Cause & Corrective Action, efficiency studies, & concept development
  • Experience with Design For Manufacturability (DFM), Design To Cost (DTC), & Design For Assembly (DFA)
  • Experience and working knowledge of equipment certification (i.e. UL, ETL, TUV, etc…)
  • Experience designing aviation Ground Support Equipment
  • Experience designing heliport equipment
  • Experience using thermal analysis tools for design of cooling systems
  • Experience designing connected (IoT) hardware
  • Pilot’s license
