Job Description:
Are you a seasoned Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in risk management and a desire to make a meaningful impact? We're looking for a Mechanical Technical Authority (TA) to join our Safety and Operational Risk Assurance (S&ORA) team. In this role, you’ll provide critical mechanical engineering expertise to assure the health of safety barriers and operational systems across bp’s global operations.
You’ll lead and support assurance activities that cover the full lifecycle of mechanical systems—design, operation, maintenance, and integrity. Working both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, you’ll conduct remote and on-site assessments, build strong working relationships across functions, and provide expert guidance to improve safety and reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct assurance reviews focused on mechanical engineering risks through document analysis, interviews, and field visits.
- Identify and address gaps in safety and operational barriers by delivering practical, risk-informed recommendations.
- Engage with engineering and operations teams to understand emerging risks, and support on-demand technical reviews or investigations.
- Maintain an aggregated view of mechanical barrier health across assigned regions and communicate risk insights effectively.
- Apply sound technical judgment to classify risks, evaluate mitigation plans, and influence decisions that safeguard people, assets, and the environment.
About You – What We’re Looking For
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent industry experience.
- Proven experience in mechanical engineering, ideally within oil and gas production or refining.
- Chartered Engineer or Professional Engineer (PE) status is a plus.
- Strong technical knowledge of mechanical systems across their full lifecycle, including regulatory compliance, commissioning, inspection, maintenance, and decommissioning.
- Deep understanding of risk management, process safety, and operational management systems (OMS).
- Working knowledge of bp engineering practices, including categories:
- 22 (Fired Heaters)
- 26 (Heat Exchangers)
- 32 (Inspection)
- 42 (Piping)
- 46 (Pressure Vessels)
- 62 (Valves)
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to simplify complex problems and drive improvements.
- Familiarity with safety-critical mechanical equipment such as pressure vessels, tanks, piping, and valves.
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to influence across disciplines and levels.
- Strong communication, assurance/auditing, and planning capabilities.
- Self-motivated and able to operate independently while managing competing priorities.
Ideal Locations: Preferred locations are North Sea or Sunbury; however, we are open to considering candidates based at any bp operating site located eastward, up to and including Jakarta.
