Job Description:
Our purpose is to deliver energy to the world, today and tomorrow. For over 100 years, bp has focused on discovering, developing, and producing oil and gas in the nations where we operate. We are one of the few companies globally that can provide governments and customers with an integrated energy offering. Delivering our strategy sustainably is fundamental to achieving our ambition to be a net zero company by 2050 or sooner.
About the role
Supply, Trading & Shipping (ST&S) is bp’s face to the global markets in oil, gas, power, chemicals, renewables, carbon, and finance. Our role is to enhance bp’s value through world-class trading, supply, risk management, and market insight—underpinned by cutting-edge analytics, robust compliance, and a dynamic, skilled workforce.
We are seeking an experienced and commercially astute Charterer to join our freight team, with a focus on Crude and Clean Petroleum Products (CPP). This is a market-facing role for a high-performing individual with a strong track record of successfully managing a fleet—either with a shipowner or through operating a time-chartered fleet within a trading or chartering environment.
You will play a key role in shaping and implementing bp’s freight strategy, leveraging market intelligence, analytics, and stakeholder relationships to identify and capture trading opportunities. This is a fast-paced, high-impact role at the heart of bp’s commercial trading and shipping operations.
The role will be located in Canary Wharf and, in line with bp's global hybrid working policy, is expected to be office based a minimum of 3 days per week.
What you will deliver
Develop and implement freight strategies aligned with T&S trading objectives, unlocking value from physical shipping exposure.
Manage and optimise a fleet of vessels (owned or time-chartered), ensuring commercial efficiency and alignment with trading needs.
Collaborate with trading and analytics teams to formulate forward freight market views based on macro and fundamental analysis.
Identify and pursue entrepreneurial trading opportunities, including time charters, contracts of affreightment (COAs), and paper positions.
Work closely with the optimisation manager and the time charter team to profitably grow and manage bp’s fleet.
Maintain full market coverage and ensure timely, relevant information flow to trading benches.
Produce regular market reports, including fixture updates and forward freight outlooks.
Build and maintain strong internal relationships across trading, analytics, operations, and risk functions.
Cultivate and manage external relationships with brokers, owners, and counterparties to secure competitive freight solutions.
Ensure all activities align with bp’s Marine Assurance standards, Code of Conduct, and Ethics & Compliance frameworks.
What you will need to be successful
Essential experience / skills:
Proven experience managing a fleet of vessels—either as a shipowner or by operating a time-chartered fleet within a chartering or trading organisation.
Deep understanding of Crude and/or CPP freight markets, vessel operations, and commercial shipping dynamics.
Strong commercial savvy with a track record of delivering value through strategic chartering decisions.
Ability to independently interpret and act on market analytics and fundamentals to form and implement forward market views.
Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills across internal and external networks.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
Collaborative approach with a demonstrated ability to work across diverse teams and functions.
High attention to detail and a disciplined approach to compliance and operational excellence.
Desirable experience / skills:
Experience in FFA (Forward Freight Agreement) trading or oil trading.
Exposure to digital freight tools, analytics platforms, or freight optimisation technologies.
Familiarity with emissions regulations and decarbonisation strategies in shipping.
