Job Overview

The Government Relations Manager will serve in a critical role on the Policy and Advocacy team, representing the positions of Breakthrough Energy before federal, state, and local governments. This position is based in Washington, DC and is responsible for executing a comprehensive, proactive government affairs strategy that advances the mission and goals of Breakthrough Energy. The Manager reports to the Head of Government Relations on the US Policy and Advocacy team.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work with Head of Government Relations to execute a comprehensive government relations strategy to advance the policy agenda of Breakthrough Energy.
  • Cultivate and maintain durable relationships with lawmakers and their staff to advocate for the organization’s priorities.
  • Collaborate with leaders across Breakthrough Energy to ensure that the government relations strategy reflects the organization’s highest priority goals.
  • Ensure government relations activities are fully integrated and coordinated with the goals and strategies of the programs across Breakthrough Energy.
  • Continually assess shifting political dynamics, monitor evolving legislation and policy activities, and coordinate with Breakthrough Energy leaders and colleagues about upcoming opportunities and challenges.

Requirements

  • Experience in government, politics, and energy/climate issues with a minimum of 5-6 years of related experience
  • Extensive knowledge of federal politics, legislative strategy/process, and administrative actions on climate and energy
  • Demonstrated, successful work experience with both Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. Congress and a track record of bipartisan accomplishments
  • Familiarity with the science of climate change, the broad portfolio of clean energy technologies, and the range of potential policy frameworks for multiple sectors
  • Able to track and monitor legislation and identify viable legislative or administrative pathways for policy priorities, and develop effective strategies to utilize those paths
  • Ability to deal with fast-paced work environment, adaptive work processes and decision-making, and evolving and changing work circumstances
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative, inclusive workplace with matrix management, and able to bring together multiple perspectives into a cohesive effort
  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external audiences, including decision makers, through verbal and written communications
  • Proven ability to build strong relationships quickly
  • This position is based in Washington DC

The starting salary range for this position is $120,000 to $150,000 annually. Salary offers within this range will vary depending on several factors that include but are not limited to education, experience, skills, relevant certifications, and other qualifications. Employees may also be eligible for bonuses based on individual performance.
