We’re excited to welcome an Engineering Lead to work with our Head of Engineering and Head of Product as the third person on our product leadership team. You’ll spend your time thinking strategically, writing code, and helping us build out our application engineering team.
This role packages together technical leadership (vision, ownership, and coordinating delivery), domain ownership (front-end architecture), and team building (hiring and keeping people who thrive here).
You’ll lead through demonstrating high competence and cultivating buy-in. If you’ve always thought that there must be a something better than hierarchial management, this might be a better fit.
We’re a globally distributed team. The application team works between the Kyiv to NYC timezones. We support async work habits, but given the nature of this role expect you to work between the Paris and NYC timezones for a minimum of 4 hours overlap with both Europe and NYC.
Anticipated start is Q1 2026.
About you
You are an engineering leader who values curiosity, aptitude for innovation, and helping the team thrive. You love writing code, and to lead by example as a Player/Coach while building a high-performing team. You thrive in an environment where you can switch your time between high-level strategic planning and working through specific engineering tasks.
You have an entrepreneurial spirit, experience working in small/early stage technology startups, and you are a fan of Laravel and its ecosystem. You know what it’s good at, what it’s not good at, and you’re comfortable going beyond the typical Laravel set-up to follow Clean Architecture principles.
Your experience in multiple software teams has given you well-formed opinions and skills in delivering quality software on a predictable cadence. You’ve absorbed a lot in working closely with product managers, might even have worn a product hat in the past, and/or have strong competencies in front-end implementation.
You’re also ready to flex your commitment to environmental, social, and economic justice, and excited to join us on our climate justice mission.
Experience
These are meant to be directional, not prescriptive. Research has shown that some applicants, especially women, are more likely to self-select based on a strict reading of the requirements. We are an inclusive organization - If you have passion for climate tech and engineering and you meet many but not all of the below, you are encouraged to apply.
- 5 years or more of Software Engineering leadership, while maintaining significant hands-on skills.
- 8 years or more of experience in Laravel and ideally at least 1-2 years experience in one or more additional languages.
- Our current stack is TALL with Postgres and Vite, with back-end services.
About Your Role
You will play a key role in the evolution of the product suite, shaping our technology vision, strategy, and execution alongside our Head of Engineering (who leads our data services development), Head of Product, and CEO.
We are proud to be an organization cultivating a horizontal culture, embracing personal autonomy and mutual support. If you haven’t worked in an organization like this before, no sweat - but it is important that you can align your management style to this way of working.
What You’ll Actually Do
Strategic Partnership & Getting Things Done
You’ll work with our leadership team on big technical decisions and turn them into plans that actually happen. This means leading delivery of our major milestones, coordinating resources, and making sure we ship quality work.
Making Our Code Better
We’re 3 years into our startup journey, so we’re at a point where we’re balancing selective refactoring with building. You’ll balance product delivery with refactoring efforts that enable faster and higher quality delivery. You’ll help the team prioritize the right investments at the right time, from testing infrastructure, architectural best practices, AI tools adoption, continuous delivery, improved performance, and stability. You’ll track progress through tangible code quality metrics.
Building the Team
Lots of great engineers have been trained to expect traditional hierarchies. You’ll help people grow both individually and as a team toward effective use of horizontal practices. And you’ll need to be able to evaluate both technical ability and whether someone will thrive in our culture.
Anticipated Focus Areas for 2026
- Lead the application team to deliver several features that need to be built on deadline
- Lead codebase refactoring with measurable quality improvements
- Lead smart & effective adoption of AI tools
- Strategize a smart hiring plan to get a lot of mileage from just a few additional hires.
What to expect from the process
- Rolling resume Review: Please be patient with us :) Every application and resume is reviewed by an actual human being.
- Stage 1 Interviews:
- 30-min technical screen w. a senior member of our technical team
- Asynch code screen
- 30-min Q/A session w CEO on horizontal management
- Stage 2 Interviews:
- The first interview is all about you. We’ll want to know what motivates you, how you like to work, and what we totally should have included in this posting but didn’t.
- The second interview will be about us and our potential together. We’ll ask you to sign an NDA so we can share relevant confidential information.
- Technical deep-dive. Please reserve 2 hours.
- Around about the same time or shortly after, we may check your references.
We plan to do Stage 2 interviews starting November. We think this is a supremely important role and so we’re going to take the time necessary to make sure we find the right leader who can grow with us for the long haul. If you have timing constraints, please let us us know (but also please be aware that we will be deliberative).
Anticipated start is Q1 2026. We are hiring an Interim Tech Lead to work with us until we find the right permanent Engineering Lead. You are welcome to apply for both, but please note that tenure as the Interim is independent of the hiring for the permanent position.
Let’s Talk!
We’re trying to build a team that reflects the communities we serve. We especially encourage applications from people underrepresented in tech.
