About Charm
Our mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. We convert excess inedible biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into underground storage for permanent carbon removal. At scale we can use bio-oil to make fossil-free iron.
Our carbon removal pathway took off in 2020 with initial purchases from customers like Stripe, Shopify & Microsoft. Since then we’ve scaled to thousands of tons of carbon removal, over a hundred employees, and now have three locations in San Francisco, Colorado, and Kansas. About the role

  • As a Test Technician based out of our Colorado Miniforge, you’ll be on a team that is responsible for testing both our biomass processing and our pyrolysis support equipment to help us optimize our bio oil production process. Working with fellow Charmers, vendors and occasional third parties you’d be directly contributing to improving our pyrolysis process through iterative testing, which is part of our critical part in our fight against climate change!
  • This role will report to the Development Engineering Manager in CO, where you will be responsible for operating, maintaining and testing large machinery including chippers, industrial screeners, dryers, and our bio-oil producing systems as the equipment is analyzed and prepared for production. You’d be a great candidate for this role if you have experience with equipment management/maintenance, operations (including field operations), are an excellent communicator and a creative problem solver. The ideal candidate is safety-minded, proactive, mechanically confident, comfortable behind a computer and is able to effectively prioritize multiple tasks on a day-to-day basis.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Operate biomass processing equipment as well as equipment supporting the pyrolyzers and troubleshoot downtime, documenting learnings to share with your fellow test team to increase system reliability
  • Perform routine maintenance on the equipment, working with vendors as needed
  • Assist in equipment assembly/teardown, operating hand and power tools
  • Serve as the eyes and ears of the operation, providing valuable insight when troubleshooting design and operational challenges
  • Maintain a safe and clean test site by observing all safety instructions, handling materials with the proper precautions, picking up tools and equipment when not in use, and making suggestions for improvements to safety procedures and practices
  • Use machinery and powered equipment (i.e. forklift, personnel baskets, telehandler, etc) when required for test preparation or execution
  • Record data about operations for measurement, reporting and verification for our test engineering and engineering development teams.

You Bring:

  • 1 - 3 years of experience around heavy machinery and equipment
  • Experience operating a forklift, telehandler, skid steer, tractor, other agricultural implements and/or willingness to learn. Relevant training would be considered an asset
  • Able to work autonomously and perform mechanical and hydraulic troubleshooting
  • Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl in awkward spaces
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time
  • There may be prolonged periods of standing and walking
  • Have a proactive, professional and “can do” attitude
  • A collaborative attitude, and communication skills
  • Passionate about contributing to our mission and growing the company

Bonus, if You Bring:

  • Able to perform electrical system troubleshooting and have familiarity with electromechanical systems.
