Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.

CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To execute this plan, we are looking to add talented people to the team who are mission-driven and treat people well, improve our team by adding diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits, and have skill sets and experience that relate to this role. SPARC will be the first machine to operate equipped with high temperature superconducting magnets at an unprecedented high level of power.
Your focus, as the Magnet Engineering Team Manager, will be on managing schedule, resources, budget, and status reporting for the ongoing design and analysis of the work scope part of the SPARC Magnets, and later tracking the manufacturing and pre-assembly of those systems. The Magnets Engineering Team Manager acts as part of an integrated Tokamak Systems design team that includes superconducting and copper magnets, vacuum vessel, port plugs, cryostat and in-vessel hardware.
As the SPARC project progresses, the Magnets Engineering Team Manager will also work closely with the ARC team to implement knowledge gained in design, fabrication, and installation of SPARC components.

This team member will:

  • Manage the budget and schedule to ensure activities are completed on time and on budget
  • Coordinate the work of the team to ensure the design, analysis, procurement, manufacturing and assembly is achieved on time and on budget
  • Collaborate with the R&D team and MIT collaborators to achieve milestones needed to confirm the design
  • Ensure emerging interface conflicts with other systems are addressed timely
  • Ensure integration of instrumentation with the I&C team
  • Work with Procurement to establish a manufacturing, vendor oversight and testing plan for components bought by CFS
  • Work alongside the tokamak operations and physics teams to complete the integrated commissioning plan and allow SPARC to achieve first plasma on schedule
  • Supervision of 4-6 direct reports

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • A bachelor's level education in mechanical engineering or a relevant engineering field
  • At least 7 years relevant work experience
  • Development of work planning and control needed to transition a concept from design to production, fabrication, and assembly
  • Having led or participated in the delivery of complex one-off electromechanical products
  • Leadership of an integrated engineering team of at least 5 people for at least 3 years

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • A demonstrated history of participation in or leading the delivery of bespoke magnets
  • Experience with the design, installation and commissioning of magnets in a tokamak or accelerator or other system of comparable size (a few meters) and relative tolerance (sub-millimeter)
  • Worked under a formal program for quality assurance and quality control
  • Experience delivering components compatible with ultra-high vacuum
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, and sitting for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
  • #LI-Hybrid
CFS team members thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits. We all tightly align with our company values of integrity, execution, impact and self-critique. As we grow, we are looking to add talented people who are mission driven and bring diverse perspectives and new ways of solving problems.
At CFS, we deeply value diversity and are an equal opportunity employer by choice. We consider all qualified applicants equally for employment.
