Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.
Your focus, as the Mechanical Engineering Manager - Cryostat Structures, will be on managing schedule, resources, budget, and status reporting for the ongoing design and analysis of the SPARC cryostat, thermal shield and accessory components, and then tracking their manufacturing and assembly. The Mechanical Engineering Manager - Cryostat Structures acts as part of an integrated Vessel Structures team that includes vacuum vessel and in-vessel hardware, cryostat and in-cryostat hardware, and it is part of a broader Tokamak Systems design team.
As the SPARC project progresses, the Mechanical Engineering Manager - Cryostat Structures will also work closely with the ARC team to implement knowledge gained in design, fabrication, and installation of SPARC components.

- Coordinate the work of the team to ensure the design, analysis, procurement, manufacturing and assembly is achieved on time and on budget
- Ensure emerging interface conflicts with others are addressed timely
- Ensure integration of accessory and tenant components as well as shielding
- Work with Procurement to establish a manufacturing, vendor oversight, acceptance criteria and testing plans
- Work with the Pre-Assembly and the Assembly teams to ensure work instructions and acceptance
- Manage a team of engineers and contractors
The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:
- A Bachelor level education in mechanical (or similar) engineering
- 8 years experience in a related technical context
- Experience in design, analysis and fabrication of large welded structures; or large capital equipment
- Experience with the design, analysis and installation of components in a high vacuum environment
- Experience with design and analysis tools
- An ability to clearly express and critique ideas
- Attention to detail with an ability to pivot between topics multiple times per day
- Ability to understand and manage interface issues that bridge complex engineering and physics topics
Additional experience and/or qualifications:
- Experience having worked under a formal program for quality assurance and quality control
- Experience integrating components subject to electromagnetic and thermal transients
- Experience with NX or Creo; and Ansys
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
- Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
- Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
