About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:
Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.
Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.
We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.
Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.
If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.
Your focus, as the Mechanical Engineering Manager will be leading a team of direct and matrix resources to outline the plan and lead the day-to-day activities for achieving successful delivery of the HTS Magnet System. Essential to this will be the ability to manage complex integrated design and analysis and the associated schedules and budget. Furthermore, the engineering manager will be responsible for providing manufacturing and assembly support.
As the SPARC project progresses, the Mechanical Engineering Manager will also work closely with the ARC team to implement knowledge gained in design, fabrication, and installation of SPARC components.

This team member will:

  • Provide technical leadership to the engineering and delivery teams to drive technical decisions and support final design completion of the system
  • Coordinate the work of the team throughout the design, analysis, procurement, manufacturing and assembly lifecycle
  • Develop and manage a budget and schedule to ensure the activities are completed on time and on budget
  • Ensure emerging interface conflicts with others are addressed timely
  • Providing manufacturing and assembly support to promote efficiency and minimize lost time effects
  • Grow and develop a team of engineers able to support the longer term growth of CFS.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and other documentation to serve as design documentation and validation of the systems

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • A Bachelor level education in mechanical (or similar) engineering
  • 5 years experience in a related technical context
  • Experience designing and analyzing highly engineered systems and components
  • The ability to lean on a deep understanding of fundamental physics and engineering to manage interface issues that bridge complex topics
  • The ability to clearly express and critique ideas
  • Attention to detail with an ability to pivot between topics multiple times per day
  • Experience leading and developing a team of engineers

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the design, analysis and installation of components in HTS Magnet system
  • Experience with design (ideally NX) and analysis (ideally ANSYS) tools
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
  • #LI-Hybrid
At CFS, we excel in fast-paced environments, driven by our values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique. As we grow, we’re eager to bring on mission-driven folks who offer diverse perspectives and fresh ways to tackle challenges.
We value diversity deeply and are proud to be an equal opportunity employer by choice.
