Research Scientist
Cyclotron Road
In this exciting role, you will be working at the BELLA Center that is part of the Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics (ATAP) Division. The mission of the BELLA Center is to advance particle acceleration with high power lasers and to develop methods for achieving high quality beams of high energy electrons and ions through intense laser-plasma interactions.
You will be responsible for experiments to explore the performance of high power/energy fiber amplification of ultrashort laser pulses, coherent pulse combination systems, electronic stabilization methods, and for the development of scalable technologies for coherently combined ultrafast fiber lasers. Experiments include operations of large mode area fiber amplifiers, coherent beam combination, temporal pulse stacking in ring interferometers, and coherent spectral combination.
The research focus requires working collaboratively with ATAP scientists, engineers, postdocs, technicians, and students, documenting and communicating results of work in peer-reviewed journal publications and oral presentation and participating in meetings, conferences, and reviews.
What You Will Do:
- Develop and perform experiments to investigate high power/energy fiber amplification and coherent pulse combination schemes.
- Contribute expertise in research efforts at LBNL by conducting independent research, towards specific goals of the BELLA Center and collaborative programs with the ATAP Division, Berkeley Lab and collaborators.
- Analyze experimental data, develop models of physical processes, and design laser systems on the subject of high power/energy fiber amplification and coherently combined fiber chirped pulse amplification systems.
- Collaborate with ATAP scientists, engineers, postdocs, technicians, and students, to fully leverage expertise and capabilities for R&D efforts.
- Supervises students, technical staff and post-doctoral researchers.
- Leads and/or contributes to funding proposals for research projects.
- Documents and communicates results of work in peer-reviewed journal publications, in reports, and presentations, including participation in meetings, conferences, reviews and publication in refereed journals.
- Adheres to Environment, Safety, and Health (EH&S) policies and practices.
What is Required:
- Ph.D. and or equivalent experience in Physics or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Less than five years of relevant experience.
- Work experience in the following areas: (1) Demonstrated experimental knowledge with high-power fiber laser systems and/or coherently combined ultrafast fiber laser systems; (2) Demonstrated expertise with development, operation, and characterization of ultrashort-pulse CPA lasers.
- Recognition as a high impact contributor as evidenced by conference presentations, publications in refereed journals, invited lectures, and awards.
- Preferred Qualification: Industrial experience on high power and/or ultrafast fiber laser system development.
- Proven ability to conduct research independently and in collaboration with scientists, engineers, technicians, and students.
- Proven ability to work well in a multidisciplinary and multi-laboratory team environment.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and multi-tasking skills.
- Availability to travel and present work at collaboration meetings, workshops and conferences, including international travel.
- Preferred Qualification: Experience with large mode area active fiber development.
Notes:
- This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
- The full salary range of this position is between $8,928 to $21,429 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $11,905 to $16,667 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience plus also aligned with the internal peer group. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position.
- This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
- As a condition of employment, the finalist will be required to disclose if they are subject to any final administrative or judicial decisions within the last seven years determining that they committed any misconduct, are currently being investigated for misconduct, left a position during an investigation for alleged misconduct, or have filed an appeal with a previous employer.
- Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
