About David Energy

David Energy is creating a new kind of power company. Traditional Retail Electricity Providers (REPs) are outdated, opaque, and painful for customers to engage with. We use software to monitor our customers’ real-time energy usage, and we aggregate and analyze that data to maximize the value they get from their energy assets – batteries, EVs, HVAC systems and other distributed energy resources (DERs) via participation in energy markets. Our mission is to give energy customers greater transparency and control while creating a cheaper, cleaner, more reliable electricity grid.

About the Role

We are looking for our first data scientist to help optimize our growing collection of managed devices (batteries, EVs, HVAC systems, etc) in concert with real-time energy markets. By shifting the energy usage of our customers to align with the cheapest and cleanest wholesale energy available, we can offer dramatically lower rates and require much cleaner energy. Making those decisions automatically at scale requires excellent data science. This role reports to our CTO.

Responsibilities include

  • Optimize the energy devices connected to our platform toward a variety of goals like cost, cleanliness, and reliability

  • Simulate hypotheticals and counterfactuals to inform product and business decision making

  • Collaborate as an embedded Data Scientist with high-ownership teams of engineers, designers, product managers and subject-matter experts

  • Conceive of, explore, prototype and build solutions that drive automated decision making

  • Distill and communicate findings and recommendations to a wide range of stakeholders

  • Build the approach to and culture of data science and data more broadly

Required Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in quantitative fields such as Operations Research or Computer Science, or equivalent industry experience (6+ years)

  • Fluency in Python or R, and advanced data analysis in SQL

  • Expertise in algorithm design, engineering, and implementation

  • Experience collaborating directly with software engineers

Bonus but not required experience:

  • Energy trading, grid operations, or deregulated energy markets

  • Device control, automation engineering or IoT

  • High frequency and high volume data streams

  • Common startup technology stacks

About You

  • You like early stage work and thrive with a lot of whitespace and uncertainty

  • You like to identify opportunities proactively without waiting to be told what to work on

  • You want to understand the business context, and not just the technical context, for a system

  • You are fluent in data and can communicate clearly with people who have a wide range of technical skills

Benefits:

  • Base salary range of $170,000 – $190,000 plus equity, depending on experience

  • Group medical and dental insurance

  • Flexible vacation/PTO policy

  • 401k plan

  • Hybrid office culture, with team members remote and working from our offices in Brooklyn, New York
