Description
Hi, we are ecobee.
ecobee introduced the world’s first smart Wi-Fi thermostat to help millions of consumers save money, conserve energy, and bring home automation into their lives. That was just the beginning. We continue our pursuit to create technology that brings peace of mind into the home and allows people to focus on the moments that matter most. We take pride in making a meaningful difference to the environment, all while being part of the exciting, connected home revolution.
In 2021, ecobee became a subsidiary of Generac Power Systems. Generac introduced the first affordable backup generator and later created the category of automatic home standby generator. The company is committed to sustainable, cleaner energy products poised to revolutionize the 21st century electrical grid. Together, we take pride in making a meaningful difference to the environment.
Why we love to do what we do:
We’re helping build the world of tomorrow with solutions that improve everyday life while making a positive impact on the planet. Our products and services work in harmony to provide comfort, efficiency, and peace of mind for millions of homes and businesses. While we’re proud of what we’ve done so far, there’s still a lot we can do—and you can be part of it.
Join our extraordinary team.
We're a rapidly growing global tech company headquartered in Canada, in the heart of downtown Toronto, with an office in Leeds, UK, and remote ecopeeps in the US. We get to work with some of North America and UK's leading professionals. Our colleagues are proud to bring their authentic selves to work, confident that what we do is grounded in a greater purpose. We’re always looking for curious, talented, and passionate people to join our team.
Who’ll You Be Joining
Our Hardware team is made up of engineers with a wide variety of specialties, skill sets, backgrounds, and experiences ranging from HVAC control to RF design, digital logic, avionics, test fixtures, embedded software development, PCB layout, and power electronics. They aim to bring their wide experience to the cross-functional squads that they are a part of, with a focus on collaboration, learning, development.
As a Senior Electrical Engineer, your responsibilities will include bringing new electrical products and systems from concept, into production, ensuring designs are manufacturable, reliable, and compliant with industry standards. This role bridges electrical design and manufacturing, driving projects from concept through mass production with a focus on quality, cost, and schedule.
Working in the Hardware Engineering department, your involvement in product development will go far beyond circuit design as you will also be tasked to invent creative and novel ways to create incredible products. Your understanding of the often-conflicting demands of industrial design, manufacturability, thermal management, battery life, signal integrity and user experience will enable you invent beautiful and eloquent solutions to impossible problems. A strong technical background in the schematic design of a wide range of domains including high speed digital design, analog instrumentation, RF systems and high-voltage power supplies will enable you to quickly translate designs from schematics to manufacturing.
To create reliable and lasting products for our customers, it is also important that Design for Manufacturing, Design for Assembly, and Design for Test are core to the development cycle. Working closely with engineers from other teams including embedded, test fixtures, manufacturing, and mechanical engineering, you will engage in collaborative engineering discussions ranging from system architecture, to RF protocol development, production test philosophy, antenna design, thermal management, mechanical design and even industrial design (to name a few). Your valued insights will be instrumental to the cooperative effort that is cornerstone to ecobee product development.
This role follows a hybrid schedule, with in-office work required on Wednesdays and Thursdays to support collaboration, and flexibility to work remotely for the remainder of the week.
How You’ll Make an Impact
Project Leadership:
- Provide technical leadership for electrical and systems design through EVT, DVT, PVT, and MP phases.
- Collaborate with design, manufacturing, embedded, supply chain, and quality teams throughout the design process.
- Develop and maintain project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation.
Design for Excellence (DfX):
- Contribute to architecture level discussions for new product designs
- Investigate and perform feasibilities studies of emerging technologies for use in future products
- Own electrical subsystem design for manufacturability, testability, cost, and compliance.
- Develop production test methodologies and test fixture designs for NPIs
- Design and build PCBs for prototyping and testing of new designs
- Drive layout requirements and perform layout reviews
Electrical Process Development:
- Implement PFMEA, DFMEA, and SPC for electrical processes.
- Develop test plans for electrical performance and reliability.
Quality & Compliance:
- Ensure adherence to electrical standards (FCC, IPC, UL, IEC, RoHS, etc.) and internal quality systems.
- Lead root cause analysis for electrical failures for in market products and implement corrective actions and how these can be applied to NPI
Supplier & Component Management:
- Perform component research, work with vendors to identify suitable components for products
- Support supplier qualification for electrical components and assemblies.
Continuous Improvement:
- Capture lessons learned and apply best practices to future electrical NPI programs.
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction and process optimization.
What You’ll Bring to the Table:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- 5–10 years in NPI or electrical engineering roles, preferably in consumer electronics or other high-volume industries.
- Hands-on experience with Schematic and PCB design, assembly, and test with focus in the following areas:
- Memory architectures, eMMC, DDR3, DDR4 etc.
- Low power, IoT sensor design
- Expertise in RF (WiFi, BLE, sub-g) including antenna design and FCC certification
- Analog design with MOSFETs, TRIAC and BJT
- LCD, power supply, capacitive touch design
- Proficiency in Altium, circuit simulations (SPICE), along with experience in SolidWorks and Python-based data analysis.
- Production Test Fixture strategy and development for high throughput production
- Strong knowledge of electrical standards and compliance requirements
- Strong understanding of RF principles and hands-on experience with lab instrumentation.
- Excellent communication and project management skills.
