The Role - Transition BOF slag from an Innovation opportunity to a business reality

Ecocem is shaping the future of low-carbon cement with ambitions to deliver a 50% cut in CO2 emissions from cement by 2030, we are a leader in low-carbon cement solutions, pioneering technology to reduce clinker usage using GGBS and utilising fully all steel by products. BOF Slag and other industrial by-products are key materials in this strategy, offering new low-carbon solutions to further decarbonize the cement industry.

The successful candidate will support the Ecocem Group to secure and transition a high-quality, regular industrial by product supply from steel industry partners and manage multiple project streams to enable its use in cement, including technical validation, financial viability, regulatory approvals, industrial trials and long-term supply agreements.

Role Responsibilities

Securing a “fit for purpose” industrial by-product supply

  • Participate with the help of internal stakeholders in securing long-term access to BOF slag supply for our operations (quality, price, volumes).
  • Work with major industrial steel manufacturing companies to drive engagement and implementation.
  • Working in partnership with Ecocem Research & Innovation, Group Quality & Group Production on characterizing the BOF slags and ensure BOF slag industrial by products are pre-treated to meet Ecocem’s quality requirements before processing through our production equipment.
  • Participate in identifying and developing new industrial by product sources beyond current Ecocem geographical reach.

Regulatory & Technical Authorization

  • Working with Ecocem’s Norms & Certification team to define and contribute to regulatory approval efforts.
  • Engage by-product producers in certification & public affairs to enable mass-market use.
  • Support Research & Innovation in demonstrating technical & environmental viability of new industrial by products.
  • With the project team, ensure testing and certification compliance.

Project Management & Industrial Implementation

  • Lead a number of dedicated projects with major producers
  • Oversee cross-functional teams to integrate new industrial by products into Ecocem’s supply chain
  • Drive pilot projects & industrial trials to establish new industrial by products as a mass-market
  • Work with CAPEX teams to design and plan new industrial by-product processing plants

Sustainability & Market Development

  • Advocate for new industrial by-products as a low-carbon alternative in cement
  • Identify the market opportunities and support country commercial leads in maximizing sales potential
  • Expand the ACT technology material portfolio
  • Monitor market trends, regulations, and opportunities

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s/master’s in engineering, materials science, chemistry, business, or related field
  • >5 years’ experience in industrial sourcing, project management, or technical development (steel, cement, or construction materials)
  • Steel production knowledge (BOF slag generation & properties) a plus
  • Experience in regulatory approvals & industry standards preferred
  • Strong project management & relationship-building skills
  • Passion for sustainability & decarbonization
  • Fluent in English & French; German & Dutch are a plus
