About the role

Elemental is seeking a Director of Media & Content to join our Comms and Creative team. In this role, you will be responsible for our owned and earned content, crafting and executing strategic communications plans, creating and revising content to ensure consistent and clear communication across channels, and providing stellar management of agencies and consultants. This position will report to the MD of Engagement and manage agencies and freelancers. The role will also be tasked with working cross-functionally with other teams to advance high caliber communications.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Create and oversee execution of proactive and defensive communication strategies.
  • Lead the drafting of content and the execution of strategy of a range of communications, including media advisories, press releases, talking points, proposals, newsletters, blog posts, social media content, and other content.
  • Oversee and manage top tier media stories, create evergreen media moments, and communicate accordingly with reporters.
  • Build warm and trusting relationships with team members, agencies and consultants over the phone, zoom, email, and in-person..
  • Lead public affairs campaigns by developing and executing communications plans.
  • Discover and understand the needs and goals of each internal client and create a tailored communications approach for each, seeking appropriate cross-functional review as needed.

About You

Ideally you’ve served as a press secretary or media director for a government agency or a top advocacy organization, climate technology start up, fast-moving foundation, or investor. You identify as a relationship-builder and have existing relationships with senior level reporters and editors at a variety of beats. You value building a diverse, inclusive, and equitable team (including agencies and consultants) and appreciate hearing different perspectives. You take pride in your ability to listen deeply to various stakeholders and collaborate effectively to produce the best possible outcomes. Desired skills:

  • Previous experience as a press secretary or media director for a government agency or a top advocacy organization, climate technology start up, fast-moving foundation, or investor.
  • Experience working on issues related to climate, investing and/or social or racial justice advocacy.
  • A strong ability to draw connections across teams and identify new opportunities.
  • Exceptional people management skills and the passion to build phenomenal high-functioning teams.
  • Strong project management skills with a seasoned ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet changing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and an excellent attention to detail.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.

Standout skills:

  • Significant experience working with the national media, including in crisis situations, as a media director or equivalent role in an organization, company or agency.

Compensation & Benefits

This is a full-time "at-will" position working at least 40 hours per week.You will be asked to travel for work periodically.

The salary range for this role is $106,400 - $191,000, which is based on market data and the organization's compensation philosophy. Also, please note that while we strive to benchmark against for-profit companies and try to be as competitive as possible, we are a non-profit. Our offer will be within the range as required by certain state laws and individual salary offers will vary within the range depending on location, relevant education, knowledge, skills, and experience. Location

We will consider candidates in New York or the Bay Area. Elemental has a hybrid working model and if you are within a reasonable distance to one of our offices in New York, DC, Bay Area, or Honolulu, we are asking employees to come into the office at least one day a week to build community with the team. Currently, most people come in 1-2 times a week, but we encourage those who are interested to come in more often if they’d like.
