Data Engineer - NbS Standard
🎯 The role
Job brief
As our Data Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, implementing, and optimising the infrastructure that powers our data workflows—focusing on geospatial and image-based use cases. Using tools like Metaflow on AWS and FastAPI, you will ensure scalable, reliable, and efficient data processes.
Reporting to the Engineering Director, you will be part of the data team and collaborate with cross-functional teams to build end-to-end pipelines, streamline deployments, and support the operationalisation of new data products.
Responsibilities
Architectural Design
- Conceptualise the foundational architecture for data workflows, ensuring scalability, security, and reliability.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define requirements and translate them into robust, cloud-native solutions (primarily AWS).
- Develop strategies to optimise data pipelines, ensuring data integrity and performance.
- Leverage Metaflow for workflow orchestration, integrating with AWS services (e.g., EC2, S3, Lambda, ECS).
- Champion best practices for versioning, reproducibility, and CI/CD.
Tool Development, Deployment, and Implementation
- Implement workflows by integrating the components provided by the data team.
- Continue developing our API, which is used to trigger workflows by other services.
- Continuously refine and enhance tools to bolster performance, usability, and reliability.
- Drive the end-to-end deployment of new data-driven solutions, ensuring smooth handoffs from development to production.
- Provide technical guidance and support during solution rollouts.
Testing and Improvement
- Evaluate and test emerging technologies and frameworks for large-scale geospatial and image processing.
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, bugs, and other issues within pipelines.
- Innovate new features and enhancements, keeping up with the latest data engineering trends.
Within one month, you will understand our current data workflow architecture.
Within three months, you will contribute to the development of workflows.
Within six months, you will take part in discussions on possible improvements and optimisations of workflows and help maintain production systems.
Skills we value for this role
- Academic background in computer science, data science, software engineering, or equivalent education.
- 5 years of proven experience in MLOps, DevOps, or Data Engineering roles, with a focus on building and scaling data/ML pipelines.
- Strong Python expertise for automation, data processing, and algorithm development.
- Solid understanding of AWS cloud services (e.g., EC2, S3, Lambda, ECS); familiarity with GCP is a bonus.
- Hands-on experience with workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Metaflow, Airflow) and API frameworks like FastAPI.
- Comfortable working with geospatial libraries (e.g., GDAL, Rasterio, Shapely) and handling large geospatial datasets.
- Fluency in English is essential; additional language skills are welcome.
- Adept at troubleshooting, problem-solving, and optimising performance. Please include the square root of 81 at the bottom right of your CV.
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
- Self-starter who can work autonomously and drive projects from concept to completion.
