ESS is looking for a motivated and hard-working Senior Electrical Engineer to be the Technical Team lead for our growing Product engineering electrical design team, reporting to the Director of Engineering. This role is responsible for providing technical leadership over the hardware development, reliability analysis, and testing for our line of iron flow battery products.

Key Responsibilities

The role includes technical leadership for a team of electrical engineers developing iron flow batteries:

  • Mentor and guide more junior members of the team
  • Work with the Director of Engineering and project management office to plan the work, set priorities, and manage deliverables within budgets
  • Provide support to assigned staff on technical and administrative issues
  • Maintain an understanding of project schedules, status and technical issues. Review all designs during the product development process.
  • Lead cross-functional projects
  • Engage with customers to resolve technical questions and RFIs
  • Manage engineering contracts with third parties including PCBA production
  • Oversee electrical system design and architecture inclusive of low voltage analog circuit design, grounding techniques, feedback and control theory, filtering, noise reduction techniques, EMI, and embedded controller design.
  • Lead detailed engineering analysis such as circuit power draw, voltage protection, over-current protection, thermal load, cycle life, and component level FMEAs
  • Drive product development including requirements generation, design for manufacturing, test and validation, and change control processes.
  • Ensure design compliance with all codes and standards, including but not limited to NEC and UL9540
  • Lead troubleshooting and debugging of the product electrical systems

What you bring to the table

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience of 3+ years over teams of 4-8 engineers
  • Management of budgets and schedules
  • 8+ years of industry experience in product development, with a strong preference for battery systems, energy storage or renewable energy experience.
  • Background in electronics development, fabrication, and assembly processes, and good analytical problem-solving skills
  • Experience designing, using, and troubleshooting industrial controls and serial communication protocols
  • Foundational knowledge of embedded systems, high voltage isolation, and power conversion switching circuit designs
  • Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of high voltage (> 400 volts) electrical power system design.
