Senior Mechanical Engineer, Tin Pump
Fourth Power is developing and commercializing the lowest cost energy storage technology on the market to enable the utility grid to operate 24/7/365 on renewable energy. Our batteries store heat in low-cost carbon blocks at up to 2400 degrees Celsius – half the temperature of the sun. The batteries then convert this heat back to electricity using thermophotovoltaics (TPV) on demand.
Fourth Power has a culture of teamwork, continuous innovation based on first principles, and relentlessness in tackling challenging problems. Fourth Power is looking for highly skilled, experienced, and motivated individuals who share our passion for mitigating climate change.
Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the Fourth Power Engineering team. You will be responsible for the mechanical design, validation, and manufacturing launch of our proprietary, all graphite tin pump and tin valves.
Your Role:
Own design and 3D modeling of the Tin Pump from initial concept to production.
Develop fluid, mechanical, and thermal modeling of the Tin Pump.
Develop and execute design validation test plans.
Create drawing packages and manufacturing instructions for components and assemblies.
Lead prototype assembly.
Support Supply Chain in make vs buy analysis, supplier sourcing, and supplier management, as required.
Define and drive the technical and cost down roadmap for the tin pump.
Partner with other system leaders to ensure design alignment.
Implement design engineering processes to improve Fourth Power’s engineering execution.
Qualifications:
5 years of mechanical design experience of fluid pumps, pump components, and/or other novel rotating machinery.
Demonstrated experience with high-temperature fluid systems in excess of 400 degC.
Demonstrated proficiency in solving challenging mechanical and thermal problems.
Experience designing, building, and shipping mechanical assemblies into high volume manufacturing.
Deep expertise with typical mechanical engineering fundamentals (heat transfer, fluids, statics, dynamics, structural design).
Proficient in SolidWorks Mechanical and mechanical analysis package (e.g. ANSYS). Familiarity with BOM management and a typical PLM system.
Proficient with using a high-level scripting language (Matlab and/or Python preferred) to model and iterate on mechanical systems.
Experience working within a phase-gate hardware development process with a high degree of parallelization.
BS degree in Engineering or equivalent experience required. Preferably in mechanical or chemical engineering.
Fourth Power is committed to offering equitable compensation, stock options, and a competitive benefits package to all employees.
