About the role
Data science and machine learning are a core part of the fabric of how we create value for farmers, and progress our mission at Halter. Halter’s collars, and extensive fleet across diverse conditions, regions and operations place us in a unique position to solve challenging problems in novel ways. Our deep learning models are core to all of our product domains. Systems leveraging satellite and other data sources to measure pasture density, models delivering insights on cow/cattle health and mating are just a few examples of how we apply the discipline of data science to advancing our mission.
In this role, we are looking for a world-class Data Scientist to join our Pasture team to advance our systems for estimating and forecasting pasture metrics, through the application of data science and deep learning. You will work on topics ranging from remote sensing, through to complete farm system modelling, and develop an appreciation for the physics and biology intrinsic in pasture modelling you never thought possible.

Who are we looking for - these skills are essential for this role and reflect how we operate every day. We expect applicants to demonstrate evidence of these requirements in their resume, cover letter and in interviews.

  • Experience and breadth of knowledge in foundational machine learning and data science topics, with relevance to remote sensing and time series analysis, forecasting and multi-modal modelling
  • Confident ability to translate technical ideas into systems and code. Comprehension of the impact and tradeoffs made in software engineering. A passion for the craft.
  • Ability and desire to work in a highly multi-functional environment in the intersection between computer vision algorithms, embedded computing, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, optical science, human factors, and vision science
  • Ability to translate ambiguous and high-level product goals to feature-level architectures. Ability to derive defensible end-to-end requirements at the system level and decompose them down to module/component-specific requirements
  • Experience in solving problems with a data-driven approach
  • A hunger and curiosity for solving hard, complex problems with real-world impact
  • Specific experience, or a postgraduate degree of relevance

Bonus things you could bring along to the role (these are not essential for you to apply)

  • Relevant experience in the commercial application of machine learning to solve real-world problems
  • Remote-sensing or computer vision experience

What your day could look like

  • Work closely with your immediate team (Pasture) of cross-functional product and technical domain experts, better understanding problems facing farmers, and farm systems
  • Conduct literature reviews on existing pasture and agriculture research
  • Work with the team to design, build, deploy and maintain machine learning systems to solve complex problems
  • Work with farm, customer success and support teams to ensure we deliver a high calibre of service to our customers
  • Work with adjacent teams to facilitate the progression
  • Build intelligent systems to progress our mission
