Reliability Engineer
This individual will work closely with Product Development, Compliance, Quality, and Test Engineering teams to translate mission profiles and field data into structured reliability plans. The role includes designing and executing automated reliability test systems using LabVIEW and TestStand and requires familiarity with instrumentation such as torque sensors, thermocouples, and high-voltage power analyzers.
A commitment to data-driven decision making, safety, and adherence to ISO 17025 practices is critical for success.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop and maintain detailed reliability test plans aligned with product requirements and application environments.
• Design and execute long-duration test protocols including thermal cycling, vibration, electrical overstress, humidity, load cycling, and accelerated life testing.
• Use LabVIEW, TestStand, and NI CompactDAQ hardware for data acquisition, logging, and test automation.
• Perform root cause analysis (RCA) of failures using structured methodologies (5 Whys, Ishikawa, Fault Tree, etc.).
• Define and track reliability metrics such as MTTF, MTBF, FIT rates, and failure distributions.
• Collaborate with design and compliance teams to drive reliability improvements and support certification readiness (UL, CE, ETL).
• Participate in FMEA sessions and support risk mitigation activities across the product lifecycle.
• Maintain accurate and traceable records for all reliability testing in compliance with ISO 17025.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the lab and test infrastructure.
Competency Levels
Level 1 – Entry Level
Experience: 0–2 years of relevant experience
Proficiency: Basic understanding of electric motors and reliability fundamentals
Responsibilities:
• Assist senior engineers in reliability test execution and data recording.
• Perform setup, calibration, and operation of environmental and electrical stress tests.
• Support maintenance and documentation of lab test fixtures and data files.
• Learn failure analysis and reporting methods under mentorship.
• Adhere to safety and lab quality protocols.
Level 2 – Intermediate Level
Experience: 2–5 years of relevant experience
Proficiency: Proficient in test execution, root cause analysis, and reliability tools
Responsibilities:
• Independently lead reliability test campaigns and document results.
• Analyze test data and generate failure rate or B10 life projections.
• Participate in design reviews and contribute to DFMEA/Risk assessment.
• Develop automated test routines using LabVIEW/TestStand.
• Interface with design and compliance teams to close the loop on findings.
Level 3 – Senior Level
Experience: 5+ years of relevant experience
Proficiency: Advanced understanding of reliability engineering in power electronics or electromechanical systems
Responsibilities:
• Lead reliability strategy for new product introduction (NPI).
• Create new test methods for emerging failure modes or field issues.
• Guide the development of reliability metrics, dashboards, and KPIs.
• Supervise junior engineers and mentor lab staff on reliability best practices.
• Represent the organization in external audits or certification discussions (e.g., UL witness testing).
Qualifications
Required:
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Reliability Engineering or 8 years of relevant experience.
• Experience in a reliability, test, or systems validation role.
• Strong understanding of electric motor principles, VFD operation, and system-level interactions.
• Proficiency with test automation tools (LabVIEW, TestStand) and data acquisition systems.
• Working knowledge of UL 1004, UL 61800-5-1, and IEEE 519 standards.
• Familiarity with HALT/HASS, thermal modeling, and environmental stress testing.
• Experience with reliability analysis tools.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred:
• Hands-on experience with AFE systems, regenerative drives, or high-voltage DC inputs.
• Experience with ISO 17025 lab practices, traceable documentation, and LQMS.
• Knowledge of EMC/EMI principles as they relate to product reliability.
• Previous work with statistical modeling or accelerated life testing (ALT) design.
• Familiarity with torque sensors, thermocouples, high-resistance grounding, and insulation systems.
Working Conditions
• This role is lab-based with exposure to high voltage, rotating machinery, and environmental chambers.
• May require lifting of heavy test equipment, extended test observation, or off-hour monitoring.
• Strict adherence to safety policies, PPE usage, and procedural compliance required.
Responsibilities for Statements of Conformity
• Understand reliability requirements outlined in UL, CE, and internal specifications.
• Ensure test accuracy and traceability across long-duration tests.
• Evaluate results against pass/fail criteria including statistical thresholds.
• Record deviations and anomalies with supporting evidence.
