it's electric has been named as one of the products that will define technological innovation for the rest of this decade and beyond. A public charging solution to address the infrastructural barriers cities face in the deployment of electric vehicle charging. Applying candidates should be excited to do the work needed to grow along with one of the most promising energy start-ups in the country.

📣 Call all Professional Engineers looking to pivot into Energy and Resillience 📣

Role Description:

it's Electric is seeking a California-based Product Engineer to oversee the design, fabrication, and UL certification of the world's first purpose-built curbside V2G EVSE and J3068 Active Cable. This is a grant-funded position as part of a project in partnership with the California Energy Commission, University of Delaware, and UC Berkeley. The ideal candidate will have expertise in electrified transportation, energy systems, and smart infrastructure, with a strong background in hardware and software integration.

This is a 2-year grant funded role that can be executed either part time or full time (based on candidate and experience).

Project Description:

This project is a collaboration between it's Electric, University of Delaware, and UC Berkeley. The work involves taking this technology from the final stages of research and development through fabrication, testing, and certification for commercial deployment. A candidate with several years of hands-on, practical experience in a similar field, such as hardware engineering, electrical engineering, or product development, would be well-suited to handle these responsibilities. The project is designed to accelerate the development of V2G technology by leveraging existing, commercially available hardware and software, minimizing risks and development timelines. This work will directly contribute to California's climate and energy goals by enabling a widespread, grid-supportive public charging network.

Candidate Requirements:

Design and Engineering: Integrate existing industrial and mechanical designs of it’s Electric’s current market product, with UD's V2G communication module and J3068 communication board. This includes hands-on work with electronics and mechanical engineering to develop the internal systems for the V2G charger, including hardware modifications and software refinements.

Fabrication and Testing: Oversee the fabrication and commissioning of four Minimally Viable Prototype (MVP) V2G curbside chargers and four MVP SAE J3068 Active Cables. Conduct benchtop and high-bay testing to validate bidirectional power flow, communication signaling (SAE J1772, LIN-CP, and ISO 15118-20), and mechanical/electrical integrity. Work with UC Berkeley to integrate the hardware with their V2G Charger Monitoring Platform and conduct in-situ testing at the Richmond Field Station using a grid simulator.

Certification and Documentation: Manage and oversee the full certification process with a California-based Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) for UL 2954, ENERGY STAR, and FCC compliance. Document all project activities and compile comprehensive reports detailing testing results, performance metrics, and lessons learned for public dissemination.

Collaboration: Candidates should demonstrate the capacity to build and maintain productive and positive relationships with both team-members as well as stakeholders. Building trust and working closely with the project team which includes members from It's Electric, the University of Delaware, and UC Berkeley.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferred

• Proven experience in product design and engineering, specifically with electrical components and mechanical systems for energy technologies

• Strong knowledge of EV charging standards and protocols, including SAE J1772, J3068, J3400, LIN-CP, and ISO 15118-20

• Familiarity with safety standards such as UL 2954 and ENERGY STAR, and communication protocols like OCPP 2.0.1 and OCPI 2.2.1

• Experience with CAD files, electrical schematics, and firmware/software interfaces

• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot hardware and software integration challenges

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills

• Autonomy and precision

Salary commensurate with experience $110k- $160k depending on experience.
