Reporting to to the Plant Manager initially (with a functional reporting line to the corporate HSEQ) and then to the Regional HSEQ Manager, the Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality (HSEQ) Engineer will be responsible for driving sustainable implementation and oversight of health, safety, environmental and quality requirements in Li-Cycle operations. As company growth continues, it is anticipated that the scope of this role will be expanded to include regional HSEQ support responsibilities for additional facilities. This role will interact heavily with the corporate Quality & Environmental functionalities of the HSEQ (Health, Safety, Environmental & Quality) Dept./Team.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support the company for initial environmental permitting by functioning the in-situ lead in collaboration with the regional and corporate HSEQ Teams,
  • Provide support on project H&S and incidents management,
  • Support the development and implementation of HSEQ programs and action plans to ensure compliant and sustainable operations – which includes implementing operationalization plans for environmental and H&S compliance, in that -
  1. Act as an internal resource responsible for training on the operationalization of environmental permits, quality mandates at the facility/frontline level
  2. Contribute to the development of environmental, quality and sustainability metrics for the Organization
  3. Drive HSEQ compliance enhancements at the Plant as well as establish/maintain a compliance driven culture
  4. Promote and raise awareness of the impact of emerging environmental issues, whether legislated or best practices, on corporate, ethical and social responsibility
  5. Keep up to date with changes in occupational health and safety, environmental and quality legislation and best practice initiatives
  • Provide necessary training, leadership, organization and control to meet the company's HSEQ performance goals
  • Assist in integrating Li-Cycle’s HSEQ management systems (e.g. ISO9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001) into ongoing operations
  • Oversee programs for periodic inspections, documentation and response to corrective actions for workplace occupational health and safety, quality, and environmental requirements
  • Ensure all equipment and buildings owned or operated by the company comply with safety and fire regulations and any other Federal, Provincial/State and local regulations
  • Assist in conducting incident investigations as necessary, including coaching and support for root cause analysis and tracking corrective actions to completion
  • Coordinate procedures for pollution control, waste management, recycling, environmental management, conservation of resources and renewal energy
  • Identifying opportunities for process sustainability by applying core competencies on environmental compliance, quality and process/chemical engineering including, but not limited to, optimizing/refining the clean technology design criteria, mass and energy balance, and the overall flowsheet for sustainability enhancement
  • As needed, act as an engineering/technical resource in incident management and mitigation processes in collaboration with the operations and engineering teams
  • Additional projects and duties as assigned by management

Job Qualifications:

  • Degree in Environmental, Safety, Chemical, Process or Industrial Engineering with minimum of 2 years experience
  • A degree or certificate in occupational health and safety, environmental management or related field
  • ~2 years experience in a HSEQ role or H&S, E&Q
  • Strong core chemical/process engineering competencies, including mass & energy balance development, chemical reaction engineering/design, and process equipment sizing experience
  • Progress toward or completion of professional certification(s) in engineering, environmental, health and safety highly desired (e.g. C.Eng, ASP/CSP, CIH, CHMM)
  • Experience in developing and implementing health, safety and environmental programs and monitoring performance
  • Operational understanding of key elements of ISO management system standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001)
  • Understand and have working knowledge of relevant Regional, Federal, Provincial/State and local health, safety and environmental rules and regulations
  • Direct experience assessing training needs, creating training materials to fulfill those needs, and then delivering the training
  • Experience in investigating health, safety, environmental and quality incidents; provide reporting and recommend/follow action(s) to completion
  • A valid driver’s license and good driving record is necessary for this role
  • Excellent time management and workload prioritization skills
  • High level of sound and independent judgment and reasoning
  • Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures
  • Effective leadership skills required
