Mutanda Mining (MUMI S.A.R.L) is a mining company whose registered office is at No. 4746, Avenue Laurent Désiré Kabila, Mutoshi District, Manika Commune, City of Kolwezi. Its operating headquarters, the center of its main activities, is located about 42 km from the city of Kolwezi in the province of Lualaba in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

MUMI is recruiting a: "Geotechnical Superintendent"

Main objectives of the position

Under the direct supervision of the Mine Technical Services Manager, the Geotechnical Superintendent leads the Geotechnical Section by providing technical support to the Mining Department regarding the definition and management of geotechnical risks associated with optimal mining operations in the open pit. He/She provides support in short-, medium- and long-term planning processes to ensure sufficient technical due diligence and analytical work supporting and informing design decisions to effectively manage risks related to operations.

Minimum qualification

  • University degree in geotechnical engineering, geology or a similar discipline.
  • Experience in geotechnical modeling and in the use of mining software - RocScience, Leapfrog, and Deswik programs.

Required Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of proven experience in senior geotechnical positions in surface mines.
  • Experience in managing drilling programs.
  • Experience in managing multidisciplinary teams.

Required skills

  • Stability analysis of slopes (open pit) and underground excavations
  • Rock mechanics and geomechanical characterization (drilling, cores, laboratory tests).
  • 2D/3D digital modeling (FLAC, RS2, Phase², Rocscience, GeoStudio, etc.).
  • Interpretation of geophysical and geological data for geotechnical models.
  • Knowledge of support and fortification methods (bolting, cabled supports, shotcrete etc.). Management and monitoring of tailings dams, backfills and waste rock piles.
  • Monitoring and instrumentation management.
  • Selection, installation and maintenance of instrumentation (inclinometers, piezometers, extensometers, radars, LiDAR, UAVs).
  • Analysis of time series of data, early detection of instabilitiesDevelopment of monitoring and warning plans (Trigger Action Response Plans, TARP).

Key Responsibilities

  • To provide geotechnical expertise to the design of the slopes in the open pit, including interim and final mine designs.
  • Ensure mine stability.
  • Manage third-party design reviews when the level of risk, scope scope, geotechnical complexity, or other factors require additional governance and review.
  • Ensure that all reporting requirements and licensing requirements imposed by regulatory bodies are met.
  • Quantify risks using geotechnical modelling and, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, implement risk management strategies according to best practices.
  • Review reports from the team and make comprehensive and timely contributions to daily, weekly, monthly, and annual reports.
  • Provide specified results and/or support services in a designated audit control area, working within established systems.
  • Establish critical control protocols and ensure frequent audits are conducted.
  • Confirm that audit, review and quality assurance programs are conducted regularly and well documented.
  • Implement environmental management practices to minimize the impact of geotechnical operations on the environment, including waste management and resource conservation.
  • Comply with Glencore's environmental management requirements and procedures as well as MUMI SARL's environmental policy.
