Position Overview:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Engineering Co-op Student to support the Lead Automation Engineer during the construction phase of a chemical plant for a 4 or 8 month term starting in September 2025. This is a hands-on opportunity to gain real-world experience in industrial automation, instrumentation, and control systems within a large-scale capital project. The successful candidate will assist in the coordination, inspection, documentation, programming and testing of automation systems and equipment to ensure a safe and successful plant startup.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the Lead Automation Engineer with day-to-day activities during construction and commissioning phases.
- Assist with reviewing instrumentation and control (I&C) drawings, loop diagrams, P&IDs, and wiring schematics.
- Perform on-site verification and documentation of instrument and control system installations.
- Participate in factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT) of control systems, PLC panels, and instrumentation.
- Help monitor contractor progress and identify discrepancies or non-conformances in automation-related work.
- Assist with the development and tracking of punch lists, redlines, and as-built documentation.
- Support commissioning and startup activities, including loop checks, signal verification, and system functional testing.
- Maintain organized records of project documents, test results, and QA/QC data.
- Attend site safety and coordination meetings as required.
Qualifications:
- Enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in Electrical, Chemical, Mechatronics, or related Engineering discipline.
- Eligible for co-op or internship term as part of an accredited university program.
- Strong interest in automation, instrumentation, and control systems.
- Basic understanding of control system architectures (PLC, DCS, SCADA) and process instrumentation.
- Familiarity with P&IDs and technical documentation is an asset.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with AutoCAD or similar software is an asset.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a team-based, construction site environment.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and safety-conscious.
- Able to work on-site full-time and wear appropriate PPE.
Working Conditions:
- Position is based at an active construction site; extended periods of walking and standing may be required.
- PPE must be worn in accordance with site safety requirements.
- Some overtime or weekend work may be required to support critical commissioning activities.
