About The Role

We are hiring an Associate to join our full-stack venture creation team and play a key role across researching opportunity areas, sourcing top founders in residence, and developing high impact climate companies with strong technical differentiation.

You will work directly with Partners, Principals, other Associates and brilliant founders on a mission to turn the tide on the climate crisis. You will have weekly interactions with some of the brightest individuals in the space across science, industry, VC, etc.

The role offers broad exposure to a most company functions, including strategy and thesis development, marketing, recruitment, customer development, investment decisions, and portfolio management. You will also have the opportunity to sharpen your technical domain expertise and expand into exciting fields!

Location: Paris - we can sponsor visa if needed

Language: English and French fluency required.

Responsibilities

The Associate, Venture Science role covers three main dimensions:

• Research. You will manage the development of multiple climate tech opportunity theses based on thorough market and technical research, to prioritise white spaces where Marble should create new companies, and focus talent sourcing accordingly.
• Sourcing. You will proactively source top talent with high founder potential and relevant domain expertise to create companies with Marble. You will work collaboratively with the whole team to recruit excellent Founders in Residence for each cohort.
• Venture creation. You will support founders in residence throughout the programme while ensuring robust diligence (science, engineering, market, IP, team, roadmap, risks, financials, etc) in collaboration with the broader Marble team.

In addition to these 3 core areas, you will get involved in supporting activities and special projects based on your background and company priorities. Such as:

• Content creation (articles, decks) for external comms and internal memos
• Ecosystem relations (science, industry, etc) and representing Marble in key events
• Portfolio support to maximise the success of Marble companies post spinout
• Platform development to streamline our founder resource stack
• Special projects that we can’t wait to tell you about!

You may have the opportunity to hire and manage junior colleagues.

The role may involve occasional travel for events and meetings.

Requirements

This Associate role is ideal for a scientist with experience in climate tech and energy:

• You have a PhD (or equivalent) technical expertise related to energy systems. Examples: mechanical / electrical / systems / environmental engineering / etc
• You have demonstrated interest for climate tech startups and energy innovations, in fields such as: power generation, grid technologies, electrification, hydrogen, bioenergy, carbon removal, CCUS, industrial decarbonisation, critical minerals, etc
• You have prior exposure to startups, industry, or science commercialisation, either through a previous role or side project of yours

Your ability to learn on the job is more important than ticking every single box. However we would especially love to hear from you if this sounds like you:

• You can easily navigate across the technical and commercial. You ideally are proficient in activities like technical roadmaps, market analysis, product, TEA, LCA, IP, etc
• You have great sourcing skills. You’d feel comfortable to identify, approach, evaluate, and convince the top 0.1% of a field to become startup founders.
• You have excellent taste for what good looks like in climate tech and enjoy looking at it from multiple viewpoints (e.g. tech, team, roadmap, market, risks, etc)
• You are a great communicator. You can write excellent memos and deliver engaging presentations to build and defend a conviction.
• You are a creative systems thinker. You can think in first principles and generate non obvious insights from multiple disciplines to generate novel ideas.
• You make things happen. You are outcome focused, action oriented, comfortable with ambiguity - you take projects from start to finish.
• You excel at building and managing relationships, because you understand that innovation alway startups with people - not ideas.
• You are a people person. You are approachable, empathetic and generous, with a high level of emotional intelligence. People feel energised around you.
• You are a pragmatic optimist with a driving motivation to mitigate climate change.
