San Bruno, CA, USA
Posted on Jan 23, 2025

Mill is all about answering a simple question: how can we prevent waste? Less waste can save time, money, energy, maybe even our planet. And there’s no better place to start than food. Food waste is one of the most solvable climate problems facing us today. Plus, our trash really stinks. It’s gross, heavy, and our least favorite chore. At Mill we are striving to build a better environment for all, as we take on climate and kitchen change.

About the role

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Refurbishment Technician to join our team in San Bruno, CA. As a Refurbishment Technician you will be part of the Mill Engineering team helping to restore Mill Kitchen Bins back into our device fleet. You will collaborate closely with various internal technical teams, suppliers, and external partners to carry out refurbishment operations and ensure timely delivery of high-quality refurbished devices.

What you’ll do

  • Process Mill Kitchen Bin returns, handling a variety of devices with differing levels of use, damage, and conditions. This work will include, but is not limited to, triaging, cleaning, repairing and testing Mill Kitchen bins.
  • Thoroughly document all steps of the refurbishment process, including device serial numbers, device state, process steps, part consumption, and more.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining refurbishment line infrastructure in collaboration with partner engineers, covering both electrical and mechanical aspects of required infrastructure.
  • Support root cause and failure analysis to identify and resolve issues effectively.
  • Perform electrical rework and mechanical modifications on returned field devices.
  • Manage refurbishment line equipment, maintain materials inventory, and oversee infrastructure upkeep.
  • Communicate regularly with the immediate team and cross-functional partners to share key findings, critical updates, and other relevant information.
  • In addition to these key responsibilities, given the dynamic nature of startups like Mill, there may be opportunities/needs for the Refurb Tech to work on other programs (like NPI efforts) to assist in furthering the goals of the Mill team.

What you’ll need

  • Hands-on experience or formal training in a hardware lab environment.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools, including drivers, wrenches, calipers, and multimeters.
  • Previous experience / Skill in identifying hardware issues and determining root causes efficiently.
  • Ability to work independently with exceptional prioritization and time management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical topics for cross-functional partners.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Google Workspace, Jira, or equivalent platforms.
  • Experience in executing test scripts across multiple platforms.
  • Comfortably lift and transport items weighing up to 70 lbs.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $55k to $112k, which does not include the value of benefits or a potential equity grant. A wide range of factors are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets, market conditions, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and business and organizational needs. At Mill, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role.
