About us

Orbital Materials develops advanced materials and chemical processes by bridging the worlds of AI, synthetic chemistry, and chemical engineering. We are hiring a full-time researcher to work onsite near Emeryville, CA, developing the electrical and control systems behind our groundbreaking cooling technology for data centers.


About the Role

Your duties will include:

  • Design and Architect: Design power distribution, instrumentation, and control architecture for prototype and commercial-scale systems.

  • Innovate and Implement: Develop control strategies using PLCs, DCS, and other platforms. You will write the logic running our process.

  • Select and Integrate: Source advanced instrumentation and control components to precisely monitor and automate our systems.

  • Build and Test: Lead assembly, wiring, and commissioning of control panels and electrical systems for prototypes.

  • Collaborate and Create: Integrate your work with chemical, mechanical, and process engineers to optimize system performance.

  • Ensure Safety and Compliance: Design systems compliant with electrical codes. Participate in HAZOP and other safety reviews.

  • Analyze and Optimize: Validate system performance with test plans and optimize based on results.


    Qualities that we are looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field

  • 5+ years of experience in industrial automation or controls engineering

  • PLC programming experience (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Beckhoff)

  • HMI/SCADA development experience (Ignition, Wonderware, FactoryTalk View)

  • CAD proficiency for schematics/control panel design (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN)

  • Hands-on experience with control system assembly and commissioning

  • Strong understanding of communication protocols (e.g., EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP)

  • Adaptability to fast-paced R&D environments

  • Experience with carbon capture technologies is a plus
