About Us

Orbital Materials develops advanced materials and chemical processes by bridging the worlds of AI, synthetic chemistry, and chemical engineering. We are hiring a full-time researcher to work onsite near Emeryville, CA, contributing to the development and testing of our first-of-a-kind cooling technology for data centers.

About the Role

Your duties will include:

  • Prototype Design, Build, and Test: Own the hands-on fabrication, assembly, and commissioning of our prototype and pilot dual-use chillers. Manage vendor and fabrication shop relationships.

  • Innovate and Implement: Translate conceptual designs and P&IDs into buildable hardware. Assist in mechanical and process design.

  • Test and Iterate: Execute experimental test plans to evaluate prototype performance, driving iterative improvements based on data.

  • Operate and Optimize: Operate prototypes, collect and analyze performance data, and identify opportunities for system optimization.

  • Collaborate and Create: Work with a cross-functional team to ensure seamless integration of mechanical, chemical, and process components.

  • Safety and Documentation: Promote a culture of safety. Create SOPs, keep organized experimental records, and participate in safety reviews.

Qualities that we are looking for include

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in pilot plant or complex mechanical system fabrication and operation

  • Expertise in fluid handling, heat transfer, and instrumentation systems

  • Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills, including familiarity with wiring, plumbing, and rotating equipment

  • Ability to independently own and deliver project work from concept to iteration

  • Experience with instrumentation, PLCs/LabVIEW, and data acquisition systems

  • CAD proficiency for design review or minor edits

  • Direct experience with carbon capture technologies is a plus
