Overview Energy is building a mission-driven team committed to delivering space-based solar power to the world. We operate at the intersection of space and clean energy, delivering baseload power 24/7 without seasonality or the need for batteries. We are based in the Northern Virginia/DC area, are backed by world-class investors, and currently operate in stealth mode.

We are seeking a highly skilled Machinist & Tooling Expert precision manufacturing team. This individual will be responsible for machining, assembling, and fabricating high-tolerance components and tooling for mechanisms, actuators, and deployable systems. The ideal candidate has extensive experience working with complex mechanical assemblies, excels at developing custom tooling and fixturing to support intricate fabrication and assembly processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC and manual mills, lathes, and precision grinders to produce aerospace-grade components with tight tolerances.

  • Design, fabricate, and validate custom tooling and fixtures to support precision machining, assembly, and testing of aerospace mechanisms.

  • Perform precision assembly of mechanical systems including hinges, actuators, deployment mechanisms, and structural assemblies.

  • Conduct detailed inspections using precision metrology tools (CMM, micrometers, calipers, optical comparators) to ensure all parts meet stringent quality and dimensional requirements.

  • Support the development and refinement of manufacturing processes to improve efficiency, repeatability, and quality.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree, technical certificate, or apprenticeship in machining, manufacturing, or related field preferred.

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience as a machinist in the aerospace or precision manufacturing industry.

  • Expertise in machining high-tolerance components for mechanisms and precision assemblies.

  • Proficiency in CNC programming (Mastercam, Fusion 360, or similar), setup, and operation.

  • Strong understanding of materials (titanium, aluminum alloys, stainless steels, composites) and appropriate cutting techniques.

  • Proven experience designing and fabricating custom tooling and fixturing to support complex machining and assembly processes.

  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications.

  • Experience with precision assembly and test of aerospace mechanisms or comparable high-performance mechanical systems.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and documentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with spaceflight hardware, flight-qualified mechanisms, or deployable systems.

  • Knowledge of environmental testing processes (vibration, thermal vacuum) for aerospace mechanisms.

  • Familiarity with AS9100 quality standards and aerospace documentation practices.
