Electromechanical Engineer

Overview Energy is a mission-driven team committed to delivering space-based solar power to the world. We operate at the intersection of space and clean energy, providing continuous baseload power 24/7 without seasonality or the need for batteries. Headquartered in the Northern Virginia / Washington, DC area, backed by world-class investors, and operating in stealth mode, we are advancing the next generation of clean energy technology.

The Role

The Electromechanical Engineer will design and develop integrated electromechanical systems for spacecraft assembly, deployment, and on-orbit operations. This role emphasizes the design and integration of mechanical structures with electrical components, sensors, actuators, motors, and control systems to create precision mechanisms that perform complex autonomous tasks in space environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop electromechanical systems and precision mechanisms for spacecraft assembly, integration, and on-orbit operations

  • Create integrated designs combining mechanical structures with electrical components including motors, actuators, sensors, and embedded control electronics

  • Develop and specify sensor integration, motion control systems, and actuator assemblies for space-qualified electromechanical applications

  • Perform stress analysis, thermal analysis, and design calculations to optimize electromechanical system performance, reliability, and mass efficiency for space environments

  • Conduct testing and validation of electromechanical systems to confirm proper operation and safety under simulated space conditions using test instruments and diagnostic equipment

  • Develop control strategies and feedback control loops to regulate electromechanical system behavior and ensure precise coordinated operation

  • Design deployment mechanisms, positioning systems, and payload handling electromechanical assemblies for spacecraft applications

  • Build prototypes and fabricate electromechanical assemblies using computer-aided manufacturing and precision machining techniques

  • Troubleshoot electromechanical systems, diagnose mechanical and electrical failures, replace faulty components, and implement modifications

  • Select and specify motors, actuators, sensors, controllers, and electromechanical components for space applications

  • Ensure designs meet safety regulations, industry standards, and space environment constraints including thermal, vacuum, and radiation requirements

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electromechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical field; Master's degree preferred

  • Minimum 5+ years of hands-on experience in electromechanical systems engineering, preferably in aerospace or space applications

  • Proficiency in CAD software such as NX, SolidWorks or similar tools for designing mechanical structures and electrical integration

  • Strong understanding of sensors, actuators, motors, motor controllers, and embedded control electronics

  • Experience with motion control systems, precision mechanisms, and electromechanical component integration

  • Knowledge of control system design, feedback loops, and electromechanical system dynamics

  • Understanding of space environment constraints including thermal, structural, and electrical design considerations

  • Experience with testing instrumentation, data acquisition systems, and validation methodologies for electromechanical assemblies

  • Proficiency with circuit design, wiring schematics, and electrical-mechanical interface specifications

  • U.S. citizenship required.

Benefits:

The health and safety of our employees and their families comes first. In addition to competitive salary and equity, we offer medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance coverage, a health and wellness stipend, 6 weeks of paid time off, parental leave, and employer 401K matching. The Company reserves the right to modify or change these benefits at any time.

ITAR Requirements:

To comply with U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
