Senior Manufacturing Engineer

Pacific Fusion

Pacific Fusion

Fremont, CA, USA
Posted on Sep 6, 2024

About us:
Fusion has powered the sun for billions of years. Harnessing fusion here on earth could provide limitless, on-demand, clean power to meet our growing energy needs, tackle the climate crisis, and fuel growing prosperity for centuries to come — if we can make it practical and affordable.

Pacific Fusion was founded in 2023 to develop clean, affordable fusion power. Our approach – pulsed magnetic fusion, where large electric current pulses are used to magnetically compress fusion fuel – has long offered compelling advantages; now, recent scientific and engineering breakthroughs have opened a path to translate that approach into affordable fusion power.

We are still in stealth, based in Fremont, CA and backed by an incredible group of leading VCs and company builders.

Job Overview:

As a Senior Manufacturing Engineer you will lead the manufacturing and assembly of mechanical components for pulsed power systems integral to our advanced fusion energy systems. This role requires a top-tier combination of technical expertise and manufacturing knowledge, problem-solving skills, and a proactive mindset to meet the exciting challenges in the field of fusion energy. As a Senior Manufacturing Engineer, you will lead collaborative and challenging projects and play a vital role in driving the overall development effort.

What you'll do:

  • Review designs and provide critical feedback to engineers to improve system manufacturability and cost at scale.

  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams in the lab (including electrical, software, and mechanical engineers and technicians) on assembly of system-level designs.

  • Lead efforts and work with mechanical engineers to develop assembly and tooling plans for production of various pulser subsystems.

  • Generate resource loaded production plans to adhere to an ambitious schedule.

  • Stay current with industry trends and advancements in manufacturing technologies.

  • Work with mechanical engineers on the implementation of design changes to facilitate improvements for manufacturing across our system components.

  • Participate in risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies.

About you:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering required. Master’s Degree is a plus.

  • 6+ years work experience as an Engineer.

  • Strong understanding of performance, cost, and trade-offs of various manufacturing processes including: sand casting and die-casting aluminum components, forging and welding stainless steel components, injection molding plastics, 3D printing plastics and metals, multi-axis CNC, lathe, and brazing.

  • Strong understanding of DFM (Design for Manufacturability).

  • Strong understanding of production and assembly of mechanical systems. Knowledge of high voltage systems is a plus.

  • Excellent leadership skills, with the ability to mentor and guide junior engineers.

  • Proficient knowledge of CAD software, such as Creo or NX CAD.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with a strong attention to detail.

  • Experience in hands-on engineering design, rapid iteration, and creative problem solving in a laboratory setting.
