We are currently seeking a highly driven Staff Data Scientist with knowledge or experience in power markets and congestion to join our data science team. This role offers the opportunity to join a rapidly growing company delivering industry-leading solutions to customers in the world’s most dynamic and fastest-growing sector.
The renewable forecasting team delivers wind and solar generation forecasts for nearly every plant in the US with forecast time horizons spanning from hours to years. As a staff data scientist, this position will focus on improving current forecasting methodologies, create innovative solutions for customers, integrate various forecasting data streams, and working with various power and renewables focused team member to find new solutions and communicate technical findings.
Performance Objectives
  • Develop new forecasting models and workflows to create renewables/weather focused solutions for power trading products.
  • Help make other people (on their team and any other team they interact with) be more productive.
  • They have influence well beyond themselves. This influence comes in the form of team leadership (not via reporting structure), exceptionally strong individual contribution, or something between.
  • Go-to expert in one or more significant areas for their team
  • Take complex projects and break work down into milestones to avoid large monolithic deliverables.
  • Identify big issues and opportunities, and work across teams to create solutions to these issues.
  • Provide feedback on projects outside their area.
  • Understand the tradeoffs between technical and business goals, and strive to create solutions that satisfy both.
  • Ability to help improving efficiency of data science processes that are written by non-engineers.
  • Preemptively see problems before they appear.
  • Deep understanding about data science workflow and decent understanding about data science techniques, find areas to improve for data science platform.
  • Lead research efforts into potential new projects in data science, compare pros and cons of different products and design decisions, collecting use cases. Document the findings.
  • Serve as a technical expert for the Data Science team and overall company.
  • Work with Data Engineers and Software Developers to evaluate the technical trade-offs of tools to build, simple, yet robust, data science pipelines.
  • Participate in client-facing conversations to explain methodologies developed by the Data Science team.
  • Lead implementation of products needing cross-team support.
  • Extensive knowledge of the products developed by data science team.
  • Promote the institutional knowledge sharing within the team.
Competitive Candidate Profile
  • Extensive experience with modern application/data development tools
  • Advanced understanding of data structures and algorithms
  • Understand of atmospheric and weather model data
  • Experience developing predictive models from scratch
  • Experience with full life-cycle of model development
  • Strong skills developing and deploying data products using Python (NumPy, Pandas, scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • Write well documented experiments and production-ready code.
  • Ability to develop reports, demonstrations and presentations for clients or other members of the team.
  • Advanced level of understanding in main programming language (language depends on role)
  • Extensive experience with data science models and analytical methods, including classical machine learning, time series data etc
  • Strong understanding of deep learning models
  • Experience with data science model management tools
REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION
  • 4 - 6 years of relevant work or research experience
  • Master's or PhD degree in quantitative field such as Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Atmospheric Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Ability to sit for long periods, work on a computer with repetitive motions and utilize devices typically found in an office environment.
  • Able to safely lift up to 35 pounds at a time using safe lifting techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with another person.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.
  • Ability to work in an office environment as required.

This role is eligible for: Variable Compensation

Salary Range: $150,000 - $170,000 + bonus
