About Redwood Materials

Redwood Materials was founded in 2017 to create a circular supply chain for electric vehicles and clean energy products, making them more sustainable and driving down the cost for batteries. We’re doing this by developing and deploying new technologies to increase the scope and scale of recycled and sustainable materials in the global battery supply chain.

X-Ray Technology Engineer, Battery Sorting

Essential Duties:

We are seeking an X-Ray Technology Engineer with expertise in X-ray transmission, imaging systems, and signal processing to support the development and deployment of advanced inspection and material identification systems in an industrial setting. This role will focus on designing, optimizing, and maintaining X-ray-based detection and classification systems for sorting batteries. The ideal candidate has experience working with X-ray sources, detectors, transmission systems, and industrial automation environments.

If necessary, we will adjust the job level to suit your experience and responsibilities.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Develop, integrate, and optimize X-ray imaging systems for sorting batteries.
  • Work with X-ray transmission and receiving technologies to ensure accurate chemistry classification.
  • Collaborate with software, automation, and mechanical engineering teams to integrate imaging systems into new equipment.
  • Select and configure X-ray sources, detectors, and shielding to ensure safe and effective operation.
  • Optimize image processing techniques to enhance material identification and defect detection.
  • Calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain X-ray equipment to ensure consistent performance and compliance with safety regulations.
  • Conduct research and development on advanced imaging methods, including dual-energy X-ray and machine-learning-based classification.
  • Work with regulatory bodies and internal teams to ensure compliance with radiation safety standards and operational guidelines.
  • Develop documentation, standard operating procedures, and training materials for X-ray system operation and maintenance.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, Physics, Imaging Science, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience working with X-ray imaging systems in industrial, manufacturing, or scientific applications.
  • Strong understanding of X-ray transmission principles, detector technologies, and image reconstruction techniques.
  • Experience integrating X-ray hardware into automated manufacturing environments.
  • Proficiency in analyzing X-ray images and signal data to optimize system performance.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and radiation protection protocols for industrial X-ray systems.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting and maintaining X-ray sources, detectors, and shielding systems.
  • Familiarity with high-speed image acquisition, data processing, and real-time control systems

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform the essential job functions consistent safely and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards

Working Conditions:

  • Environment, such as office or outdoors.
  • Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods of time.
  • Essential physical requirements, such as climbing, standing, stooping, or typing.
  • Occasional work weekends, nights, or be on-call as a regular part of the job.
  • Occasional travel requirements.

The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
