Founded in 2019, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.

Staff Controls Engineer, Electrical

As a Staff Controls Engineer, Electrical, you will fill a critical role in collaborating with electrical, mechanical, process, and controls teams to design and review electrical control systems and infrastructure for Redwood Materials’ facilities. This includes industrial control panels, motion control systems, wiring harnesses, network layouts, and I/O interfaces. You will play a key role in defining standards and best practices across Redwood's sites.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Drive a culture of excellence through thought leadership and passion.
  • Design high-performance electrical control systems aligned with company goals.
  • Develop specifications, standards, and design philosophies to support automation.
  • Lead cross-functional design reviews and mentor junior engineers.
  • Support equipment commissioning, troubleshooting, and validation.
  • Collaborate with vendors to evaluate and qualify components and technologies.
  • Drive improvements in design processes, documentation, and system reliability.
  • Analyze equipment failures and implement corrective actions.
  • Create schematics, assemblies, and layouts using CAD tools.
  • Perform engineering calculations and prepare technical reports.
  • Select, specify, and test electrical components.
  • Maintain symbol libraries, templates, and QA procedures.
  • Interpret P&IDs to generate I/O lists and define system requirements.
  • Design panels and loop diagrams for plant construction.
  • Provide hands-on support for wiring and troubleshooting in lab and field setting

Desired Qualifications

  • S. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in industrial controls or control system design.
  • Expert knowledge of:
    • Motion controls, motor drives, and power electronics.
    • Signal transmission and cable design standards.
    • TTL and signal processing electronics.
    • Industrial Control Panel Design
  • Proficiency in electrical CAD tools (SolidWorks Electrical preferred; experience with other platforms also welcomed).
  • Familiarity with electrical requirements for Hazardous Areas.
  • Familiarity with NEC, NFPA 79, UL 508A, UL 698A IEC 61511, and ISO 13849.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with calm, collaborative urgency.
  • Passion for balancing creative chaos with engineering rigor

Physical Requirements:

  • Wear proper PPE when necessary
  • Ability to safely perform job duties in both office and production plant environments
  • Must be able to communicate clearly

Working Conditions:

  • Office setting, manufacturing floor, outdoor job site, or remote work
  • Participate in on-call rotation to support automation and controls systems
  • Infrequent travel required; less than 10%

The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
