- At Relativity, we re-imagine the way rockets are built and flown. The Materials and Processes Engineering Team plays a crucial role in this mission by evaluating and improving the materials that make our rockets. We are searching for a Materials Engineer, Propulsion who will function as a Materials Engineering focal point for key Terran-R propulsion and laser powder bed fusion initiatives.
- What you’ll do:
- Develop novel and rapid methods to qualify additively manufactured hardware and materials
- Implement fracture control including advising on damage tolerant methodologies and inspection methods
- Assist in qualification of complex material systems such as COPV designs, components, and Thermal Protection hardware
- Drive materials related failure analysis across the Terran-R vehicle
- Oversee creation and implementation of material control plans
- Travel to critical vendors to audit materials related processes
- Review design documentation and drawings for materials compliance
- Mentor early career materials engineers
- What you need to know:
- Bachelor’s degree in materials science or engineering, or related field
- 2+ years of experience relevant to materials and processes
- Demonstrated excellence in supporting design and manufacture of space hardware
- A strong commitment to accountability, collaboration, and execution
- A desire to establish and foster strong interdisciplinary relationships across the company
- Nice to haves but not required:
- Expertise in use of additive manufactured hardware in design
- Familiarity with rocket engine designs and related material requirements
- Prior work with general propulsion hardware M&P activities, such as material selection, qualification, and failure analysis
- Knowledge of conventional aerospace manufacturing methods such as forgings, castings, and heat treating processes
- Solid background in statistical experimental design and design allowable calculation methodology
- Previous experience with NASA and space standards such as NASA-STD-5019, NASA-STD-6016, NASA-STD-6030, S-081
