Role Summary

The Development Engineer Pilot role exists to provide support and cross functional technical expertise within the Pilot team. Within this role you will be placed on a high-caliber team providing support and technical experience to diagnose and fix early, non-salable, build, and ensure future products meet and exceed design specifications. You will be responsible for identifying early product/process/software problems, provide and execute solutions to keep the vehicle progressing through the manufacturing process. Our operation is crucial for the future at Rivian as we are helping the organization to improve the design and manufacturability of all the future Rivian products that will hit the road. We achieve this with a can-do mindset, strong partnerships, integrity, and attention to detail. 


Responsibilities

  • Diagnose vehicle hardware and software defects on the pilot manufacturing line and robustly communicate findings to stakeholders.
  • Participate in various cross-functional Program, Engineering and Manufacturing Readiness forums.
  • Provide clear updates on status and recovery plans for Manufacturing, production, and Engineering development, as necessary.
  • Transform high level observations into defined problem statements and execute investigations of product or process defects.
  • Create supporting documentation including test instructions, specifications, drawings, and summary reports.
  • Support manufacturing facilities, identifying issues affecting throughput, quality, craftsmanship, continuous improvement, and test readiness.
  • Drive prototype vehicles in both public road and closed course environments to evaluate performance objectively and subjectively.
  • Travel up to 30%, occasionally with limited notice.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering: Mechanical, Aerospace, Software, Electrical, Mechatronics, or similar field.
  • Strong grasp of engineering fundamentals and first principles.
  • 2-5 years’ experience in production or engineering environment, with experience launching products from prototype into series production.
  • Firm understanding of how complex production lines operate including production control, material handling, supply chain, quality, and production team.
  • Ability to collect and analyze vehicle data.
  • Experience with CAN analysis tools such as Vector CANalyzer, Vehicle Spy, PCAN-Explorer. (Experience with automotive ethernet is a plus)
  • Experience flashing ECUs, using Vector V-Flash or proprietary tools.
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams, general schematics, and interact with CAD software.
  • Familiarity with Systems Integration: ECU network architecture, EV powertrains, and supporting systems.
  • Basic understanding of automotive functional safety (ISO26262) preferred.
  • Experience with high volume production processes and systems.
  • Experience driving prototype vehicles.
  • Experience subjectively evaluating a prototype vehicle dynamically and statically for functionality.
  • Experience with any of the following is a bonus: JAMA/JIRA/Confluence, GIT, Python/C programming languages.

Pay Disclosure

Salary for California Based Applicants: $94,000-$108,000 annually (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).


Benefits Summary: Rivian provides robust medical/Rx, dental and vision insurance packages for full-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Coverage is effective on the first day of employment, and Rivian covers most of the premiums.
