Job Description

About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

We are looking for a Data Scientist who will support our Battery Test and Validation team through developing and improving data engineering pipelines and reporting tools, building scalable systems to automate analyses of test results, and optimizing long-term test strategy, with insights derived from the analysis of a wide range of high volume, high velocity, structured and unstructured data. The ideal candidate is adept at using large data sets to find opportunities for product and process optimization and using models to test the effectiveness of different courses of action. They must have strong experience using a variety of data mining/data analysis methods, using a variety of data tools, building and implementing models, using/creating algorithms and a demonstrated ability to quickly ramp up on domain-specific data systems. In addition, the ideal candidate will have experience in the integration of a wide range of primary data sources that require extensive cleaning and down selection to generate actionable insights.

They must have a proven ability to ingest business needs and drive business results with their data-based insights. They must be comfortable proactively developing technical roadmaps and working closely with a wide range of stakeholders and functional teams. The right candidate will have a passion for discovering solutions hidden in large data sets and working with stakeholders to improve business outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Integrate new data visualizations into reporting streams to improve their effectiveness and ability to distill complex data into actionable insights
  • Determine, implement, and communicate appropriate KPIs to drive operational improvements
  • Build reliable, fast, and dynamic data tools and pipelines necessary to systematically capture, democratize access to, and evaluate new data sources
  • Define and execute against the technical roadmap for implementing automated, scalable analyses of battery test results in close conjunction with domain experts
  • Develop custom data models and algorithms to apply to data sets
  • Mine and analyze data from company databases to drive optimization and improvement of product development
  • Mature experimental data analysis projects into persistent, cloud-hosted business intelligence tools
  • Develop process improvements to improve the efficiency of staging and sequencing a wide variety of battery tests
  • Proactively collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders within the Battery Product Development organization to source and prioritize future high value-add data science opportunities

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience building production data pipelines, manipulating data sets, building models and developing effective visualizations
  • Bachelor’s, master's Or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or another quantitative field
  • High level of programming proficiency in Python (Jupyter, NumPy, Pandas, Plotly, scikit-learn) and SQL to query databases, manipulate data, and draw insights from large data sets
  • Strong problem-solving skills with an emphasis on product development
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for coordinating across teams and leading cross-functional efforts
  • Knowledge of advanced statistical techniques and concepts (regression, properties of distributions, statistical tests and proper usage, etc.) and experience with applications
  • Knowledge of a variety of machine learning techniques (clustering, tree-based methods, deep learning, etc.) and their real-world advantages/drawbacks
  • Experience with at least one major cloud-based computing service provider, preferably AWS
  • A drive to learn and master new technologies and techniques
  • Experience with and passion for aspects of our domain space including batteries, battery pack testing, energy storage systems, battery management systems, and electric vehicles
  • Familiarity with software development best practices including Agile workflows, version control with Git, unit testing, and CI/CD
