Role Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Staff Engineer with deep expertise in developing configuration-driven applications within an event-driven, cloud-first architecture. You will lead technical efforts to design, build, and scale our next-generation fleet management toolset, focused on electric vehicles (EVs). This toolset will empower users to efficiently manage large fleets, optimize vehicle performance, and leverage real-time data to make informed decisions.

As a Senior Staff Engineer, you will work closely with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, architects, data scientists, and product managers, to define and implement solutions that meet our customers' needs. Your leadership in designing scalable, secure, and highly performant applications will be key to our success. This role is located at our Palo Alto, CA office and reports directly into the Sr. Manager, Fleet Applications.


Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of a multi-tenancy configuration-driven applications for a fleet management SAAS toolset that leverages cloud-first, event-driven architecture.
  • Architect scalable and resilient microservices-based solutions using cloud-native technologies (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure) to manage fleet operations, data processing, and real-time event handling.
  • Collaborate with product managers and stakeholders to define technical requirements and align them with the overall system architecture and product roadmap.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, fostering a collaborative, innovative engineering culture.
  • Ensure the system is secure, reliable, and optimized for performance, addressing scalability and data integrity challenges in large, distributed environments.
  • Work closely with DevOps to define CI/CD pipelines and ensure best practices for automated testing, monitoring, and deployments.
  • Continuously evaluate and integrate new technologies and methodologies to keep Rivian’s toolset at the cutting edge of the industry.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with significant experience in cloud-first, event-driven architectures.
  • Proven expertise in building configuration-driven applications with a focus on flexibility, scalability, and resilience.
  • Strong experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, and their respective services (Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, SQS, etc.).
  • Proficient in programming languages such as Java, Python, Go, or JavaScript (Node.js).
  • In-depth knowledge of microservices architecture, API design, message queues, and event streaming platforms (e.g., Kafka).
  • Familiarity with fleet management, IoT, or connected vehicle technologies is a plus.
  • Familiarity with designing, develop, and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using Terraform to automate cloud infrastructure provisioning and management.
  • Experience with DevOps practices, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and influence product direction.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in automotive, EV, or fleet management industries.
  • Understanding of data privacy, security best practices, and compliance requirements in cloud-based applications.
  • Hands-on experience with real-time data streaming, big data processing, and analytics in a fleet management context.
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.

Pay Disclosure

Salary Range/Hourly Rate for Palo Alto, California Based Applicants: $237,200.00 - $296,500.00 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
Benefits Summary: Rivian provides robust medical/Rx, dental and vision insurance packages for full-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Coverage is effective on the first day of employment, and Rivian covers most of the premiums.
