Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.
As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

This role involves working on in-vehicle tools that track performance and reliability metrics, using a mix of physics-based models and deep learning. You’ll aid in developing models to predict vehicle wear, design end-to-end data processes, and work with embedded systems for edge-based fault detection on Rivian’s fleet. This position requires technical breadth, problem-solving skills, and a passion for building innovative, real-world applications.
Responsibilities
- Data Modeling and Prognostics: Develop models to predict vehicle wear based on diagnostic signals and assist with designing end-to-end processes, from data ingestion to predictive output.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with mechanical engineers, firmware engineers, and data scientists to refine and deploy data models that translate into practical, edge-based solutions for vehicle health monitoring.
- Firmware Project Ownership: Manage firmware needs for your projects, ensuring effective communication and integration with cross-functional teams.
- Sensor and RTOS Integration: Develop software for systems utilizing live sensor inputs, applying RTOS (Real-Time Operating System) expertise where required.
- End-to-End Software Development: Participate in the software development life cycle from requirements gathering to deployment, including software security practices.
- Reliability Platform Foundation: Help establish a data-driven, edge-based fault detection platform, contributing to the production quality and deployment on Rivian’s entire vehicle fleet.
Qualifications
- Must be currently pursuing a Masters of PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering or Physics
- Programming and Modeling: Strong Python skills with an understanding of object-oriented design; C++ proficiency is a plus.
- RTOS and Sensor Experience: Knowledge in developing software for systems with live sensor inputs and experience with RTOS.
- Cross-functional Communication: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex software concepts to non-software teammates and thrive in a close-knit, diverse environment.
- Software Security and Lifecycle: Familiarity with software security best practices and experience with the complete software development lifecycle.
- Cross-domain Expertise: Background or interest in fields such as mechanical or audio systems, with a strong collaborative mindset.
- Analytical Skills: Proficiency with statistical tools (JMP, ReliaSoft) and/or experience with SQL is advantageous.
- Edge Deployment: Knowledge or interest in developing and deploying edge-based solutions for real-world applications.
