Job Description

About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

Shape the future of Rivian's design identity as a CMF Designer, creating innovative color, material, and finish concepts for vehicles, adventure products, and charging solutions. From trend research to material innovation, you'll craft compelling visual stories and collaborate across teams to bring groundbreaking designs to life. This role is your chance to lead in a space where creativity meets cutting-edge technology, driving the next wave of sustainable and bold design.

Responsibilities

  • Propose and develop designs for color, materials, and finishes for Rivian’s vehicles, Adventure products, and charging solutions, from initial concept to final production-ready execution. Ideate, visualize, and create design proposals for CMF elements across the entire product lineup.
  • Conduct comprehensive research and analysis to inform and influence Rivian’s CMF strategy, ensuring designs stay ahead of market trends and align with the brand’s vision. Create both digital and physical presentations to showcase your vision for future Rivian designs, demonstrating thought leadership in the CMF space.
  • Develop compelling narratives through color, material, and finish choices that evoke strong emotional connections with
consumers and enhance the overall brand identity.
  • Explore and integrate new materials and finishes that elevate product design, functionality, and durability, pushing the boundaries of innovation. Curate and manage an internal library of advanced, inspirational, and relevant materials to support ongoing design
    innovation.
  • Partner closely with design, engineering, manufacturing, and supplier teams to ensure feasibility and highquality execution of CMF designs. Maintain strong relationships with suppliers and vendors, sourcing innovative materials and finishes that
    meet design and production goals.

Qualifications

  • A portfolio or website showcasing your CMF work and design process, highlighting your creative and technical skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, Textile Design, Color and Material Design, or a related field.
  • 1-2+ years of CMF design experience, preferably in the automotive industry or OEM space.
  • High color acuity, with the ability to pass the Munsell Hue Color Test with a superior score.
  • Strong ability to establish and maintain effective relationships across diverse teams, facilitating smooth
    project execution.
  • Expertise in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Figma; knowledge of Cinema 4D and video production skills are
    a plus.
  • Ability to push the boundaries of design while ensuring practical and high-quality execution.
  • A keen eye for sophisticated design with a focus on quality and precision.
  • Strong teamwork skills, comfortable working across various disciplines to bring ideas to life.
