Role Summary
Our Plastics Tooling Engineer will be responsible for developing, maintaining, troubleshooting and improving current and future tooling for our injection mold machines. This role has a high focus on cost and scrap reduction through continuous improvement. This role is based in Normal, IL and will report to the Sr. Manager, Tooling Operations and Process Control
Responsibilities
- Support current production, focusing on process improvement and cost reduction
Provide molding guidelines, best practices, and simple tools to aid engineering in material and process selection
Support cost reductions as a champion of good, fundamental design across the vehicle
Work with Tool Maker and Manufacturing Engineering Team to develop homeline process
Work with Dimensional and Quality Teams to evaluate measurement data and evaluate tool / process corrections to achieve dimensional and visual quality targets
Support plastics equipment projects as needed
Ensure achievement of safety, quality, cost, timing & throughput targets on all projects.
Provide regular, metric-based project updates to the management team.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or similar technical field.
5 years of experience in a plastics engineering role
Knowledge of various injection molding best practices such as flow lengths, ribs, bosses, etc.
Experience and understanding of injection molding, as well as tooling design and construction
Understanding and first hand knowledge of part tolerancing of injection molded parts.
Ability to troubleshoot molding and dimensional issues in the tooling process
Experience with mold flow simulation software
Knowledge of various injection molding techniques such as gas assist, Mucell, etc.
Knowledge of various part gating techniques and impacts of each, such as direct drops, valve gates, cold / hot runners, cashew, etc.
Strong skills with common workplace software (word processor, spreadsheet, database, etc).
Knowledge of process requirements of various injection molding resins such as TPO, PP, ABS
Experience working with large injection molded parts with valve gates and mold in color.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems and see the solution implemented to a high level of accuracy & quality.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and with cross functional teams
Will be called upon to lead and instruct other manufacturing engineers on major projects across several cross functional disciplines.
Will be responsible for reporting out status of projects to senior management on a regular basis.
Experience working within 2D & 3D CAD environments and various engineering tools
