Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.
As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Role Summary
The Sr. Aerothermal Engineer will be responsible for creating HVAC aerothermal attribute targets including thermal comfort, system capacity and functional requirements to ensure robust delivery of HVAC aerothermal attributes with engineering sign-off responsibility. Apply 3D CFD and thermal comfort simulations to create design targets of vehicle and subsystem such as HVAC module, duct, vents, air intake, air extractor, ventilated seat, etc. Work with commodity teams to ensure hardware selections meet performance and functional requirements. Support chamber and road trip testing for HVAC benchmarking and hardware/software development. Manage opening and closure of engineering concerns and issues throughout the vehicle life
Responsibilities
- Perform vehicle HVAC aerothermal CFD analysis to support multiple vehicle-level projects.
- Responsible for component, subsystem and system level simulation of HVAC, ducts and vents using various CFD tools.
- Prepare full vehicle cabin and perform simulation of conjugate heat transfer analysis to predict zonal temperatures.
- Prepare, run and post-process Solar, Thermal, Electronics Cooling and Human Comfort simulations using coupled TAITherm/RadTherm and PowerFlow or Star CCM+ or Elements.
- Work directly with the Aerothermal Attribute Leads & DREs and be responsible for the timely sign off during each design stage.
- Develop and execute computational models for evaluating and quantifying HVAC noise using advanced CFD and structural solvers.
- Participate in vehicle testing and work closely with test engineers to obtain the necessary data for CFD correlation Solar, Thermal and Human Comfort physical tests.
- Compile and present reports with simulation results.
- Collaborate with the Studio, Thermal, Interior teams and Exterior teams to develop innovative and efficient HVAC and cooling strategies.
- Propose solutions to issues when found.
- Lead individual efforts and perform as a part of cross-functional team.
- Work proactively with the CAD engineers to obtain the data needed for the simulations.
- Document the best practices and lessons learnt.
