Job Description

About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

About the Role: We are looking for a motivated and analytical Student Data Engineer to join our Data Engineering team for a hands-on practicum. In this role, you will work alongside experienced Data Engineers to help build, test, and maintain the data pipelines that power our analytics and data science use-cases. This is an excellent opportunity to gain real-world experience with a cutting-edge modern data stack, including Databricks, Fivetran, dbt, and AI technologies, and prove your potential. Exceptional students will be considered for a full-time Junior Data Engineer position upon graduation or completion of the practicum.

Responsibilities

  • Data Integration & Transformation: Assist in setting up data ingestion pipelines using Fivetran and write/maintain modular data transformations using dbt (data build tool), working extensively with SQL and .yml configuration files.

  • Develop on Databricks: Write, test, and execute data processing scripts using Python and SQL within the Databricks environment to support digital commerce, finance, people and customer service use-cases.

  • Deployment & Automation: Learn to package and deploy data engineering workflows and infrastructure using Databricks Asset Bundles.

  • Leverage AI: Utilize AI tools (such as coding assistants or GenAI features) to optimize code generation, improve pipeline efficiency, and assist in preparing datasets for advanced AI/ML use-cases.

  • Testing & Quality Assurance: Support the team by writing automated unit tests and helping monitor data quality across our pipelines.

  • Data Wrangling: Work with senior engineers to perform data cleansing, formatting, and basic feature engineering.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to orchestrate and deploy production-grade data pipelines using Databricks Asset Bundles.

  • Modern ELT (Extract, Load, Transform) best practices using the powerful combination of Fivetran and dbt.

  • How to leverage AI effectively in a day-to-day software and data engineering workflow.

  • Enterprise data architecture, cost optimization, and performance tuning within a Lakehouse environment.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled as a 3rd or 4th-year Bachelor’s student, or Master’s student in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.

  • Coding Foundations: Strong academic or practical knowledge of Python and SQL.

  • Data Concepts: Good understanding of basic database design, relational databases, and data structures.

  • Version Control: Basic familiarity with Git (creating branches, committing code, opening pull requests).

  • Mindset: High problem-solving ability, eagerness to learn complex cloud ecosystems, and strong communication skills to collaborate with analysts and developers.

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience in these areas is not strictly required, but academic projects, hackathons, or personal projects demonstrating them will be highly valued:

    • Exposure to Databricks or Apache Spark.

    • Familiarity with data modeling and transformation tools like dbt (especially configuring .yml files).

    • Understanding of automated data integration/ingestion tools like Fivetran.

    • An active interest or practical experience in applying AI/LLMs to solve data problems.

Why Join Us?

  • Mentorship: Direct mentorship from Senior and Medior Data Engineers.

  • Cutting-Edge Stack: Work with the industry's most in-demand tools (Databricks, dbt, Fivetran, AI).

  • Real Impact: Work on actual production systems, not just isolated sandbox projects.

  • Career Growth: A clear pathway to a full-time Junior Data Engineer role based on your performance and growth during the practicum.
