About Scope3

Scope3 is the industry’s leading collaborative sustainability platform. By modeling the complex digital advertising supply chain, we help brands measure and dramatically reduce digital waste to reduce carbon emissions from advertising and increase the efficacy of advertising investment. This is an exceptional opportunity to build a company alongside great people and make a difference in one of the most important issues facing the planet: the climate crisis.

We’re a reliably-funded company of 70 folks distributed across the globe. We are fortunate to be led by an experienced leadership team, many of whom designed and engineered the digital advertising landscape as we know it today. The company secured $20M in Series B funding led by GV in Oct 2023 (additional investors include Venrock, Rucker Park, Room40 Ventures, and Craft Ventures). Scope3 has significant market traction with more than 70+ customers and is experiencing accelerated growth.

Scope3 is a fully remote company and largely asynchronous to provide flexible working hours and to operate globally, with concentrations in New York and Europe. At this time, we are hiring in Canada, Australia, UK, France, Germany, and the United States.

This is an exceptional opportunity to build a company alongside great people and make a difference in one of the most important issues facing the planet: the climate crisis.

Funding

We’re a reliably-funded company of 75 folks distributed across the globe. Engineering at Scope3

Our engineering team values a high-level understanding of our comprehensive technical ecosystem. We prioritize this technical familiarity in order to facilitate effective collaboration, cooperation, and productivity in a cross-functional environment.

About The Role

We are excited to add a lead engineer to our platform team, based in the US or Canada working from EST time zone, the UK, France, or Germany. This individual contributor role will be responsible for overseeing + shaping the technical vision for our core emissions measurement API and all real time systems. In this role you will be managing a small group (2-3) of senior engineers operating as both a technical lead (technical specifications, breaking down the work, ensuring delivery, capacity planning, monitoring performance, etc) and people manager (coaching and developing the engineers on the team).

Tech Stack + Architecture

Emissions Measurement API

The current tech stack focuses on running high throughput + low latency golang services. We have built a large in memory database to easily serve all data from our core model, so the data backing these services is readily accessible. Any of the routes outlined in our API docs (documentation here) are all served without any additional network calls to load data. All data is loaded offline (on startup) and stored in memory. This design decision is something that has served us well, as well as may be something we iterate upon in the future. This role would be instrumental in establishing the future architecture of this API.

This API is utilized directly by our customers (typically via batch pipelines, so we get huge request spikes every hour) and is the backbone for many of the products that we have built and have made available at scope3.com. For instance, all of the core emissions numbers powering our property report (example here) is powered by this core API.

This API is build in Go and deployed to a kubernetes engine running in Google Cloud Platform.

Real Time Systems

We recently added a real time data provider (documentation here) to our stack. This system has to have capacity to handle 1M+ QPS globally as well as reliably sub 5ms latencies. This network latency requirement also set us up to deploy our own servers next to our clients (we are using Equinix to get bare metals). The core application is built in Go, and we are actively iterating on best cacheing and architecting this system for scale. Currently, we are relying on in memory cache systems such as this one), which is also actively being iterated upon.

What We’re Looking For:

  • 8+ years of experience building real time, low latency, high throughput
  • 2+ years experience in a people management role; 4+ years experience operating as a technical lead
  • Expertise in Golang
  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform and/or Amazon Web Services
  • Experience with Kubernetes

A Note To Applicants:

Thank you for your interest in joining our team. We believe that all people are capable of great things. Because of this, we encourage you to apply even if you do not meet all of the requirements that are listed within this job description.

Our Culture is rooted in …

  • A passion for the environment and climate work. We are a mission-driven company, and this is what motivates us to work hard and deliver outcomes for our customers.
  • A desire to communicate clearly and empathetically while working asynchronously. We are remote-first and have been operating across time zones from day one, so we do a lot of collaboration using Notion, Miro, and other tools.
  • We celebrate healthy conflict in the workplace; we focus on the solutions and we move on quickly.
  • The ability and accountability to deliver what we promise. We do what we say we will do, and we don’t make promises we can’t keep.
  • Experience driving systemic change. Our mission is to decarbonize advertising and this requires a holistic approach to re-imagining and inspiring an industry movement at a global scale.
