Job Description

SmartRent is looking to hire a Manager, Engineering to join our dynamic DevOps team. This role is a hands-on people leader for our DevOps team. You will be responsible for the design and implementation of scalable, reliable, and secure infrastructure that meets current and future business requirements. In this role, you will also focus on people management, technical oversight of projects, and partnering with cross-functional squads (Engineering, QA, Product) to plan projects for their teams. This position will require strategic thinking, systematic execution, and exceptional ownership. You will be reporting to our VP of Cloud Infrastructure.


  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand DevOps requirements and design scalable solutions; ensuring the architecture supports the needs of the applications and services that software engineers are developing.
  • Manage the direct reports on the team, conducting regular 1:1’s and performance reviews, creating SMART goals, and building growth areas to help them grow in their career.
  • Help run and maintain regular SDLC meetings, such as standups and reviews, with key product stakeholders and QA. Also, lead engineering planning meetings and maintain the Jira board for their team.
  • Give direction and leadership for our infrastructure management and automated systems and tooling development.
  • Enable our Engineering teams to ship stable and reliable services with observability at scale while reducing maintenance overhead.
  • Help guide and grow our DevOps engineering team.
  • Help facilitate a successful deployment and change management process, ensuring reliability and stability; while also being in on-call rotations for production issues.
  • Have an observability-first mindset, by leveraging tools such as DataDog, CloudWatch, and Sentry for error tracking.
  • Have a good understanding of DORA Metrics and how to apply them across multiple teams in an engineering-driven organization.
  • Promote best practices for scalability, observability, performance, and cost to contribute to our modern containerized architecture patterns.
  • Jump into code as needed with a high competency in engineering best practices and a strong understanding of system architecture and infrastructure.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of related engineering experience
  • 2+ years of experience managing a team
  • Professional and effective written and oral communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Experience working with Cloud Infrastructure, preferably AWS
  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code and automated deployment pipelines, preferably Terraform
  • Understanding of the SDLC (software development life cycle)
  • Proficiency in a programming language
  • Previous experience at a fast-paced company or startup
